Laguna sweeps past Tesoro

Laguna Beach High’s boys’ volleyball team collected its third Pacific

Coast League victory with a 15-8, 15-8, 15-9 triumph at Tesoro.

Team leaders for the Breakers included Matt Anderson in kills with

15, Evan Dineen in digs with nine and Nick Aronoff with 26 assists.

The win moved Laguna to 3-1 in league and evened the Breakers’

overall mark at 4-4.

Laguna resumes PCL play Wednesday when it hosts University in a

showdown for second place. The match will begin a busy stretch for

the Breakers who play six matches in a four-day period, which

includes a crucial Thursday match at Corona del Mar and the Santa

Barbara Tournament of Champions beginning Saturday.

In the latest CIF Southern Section Division II boys’ volleyball

poll, Laguna was ranked fifth. San Marcos headed the division poll,

followed by Valencia of Valencia, Santa Ynez and Corona del Mar.

In baseball action, Calvary Chapel High parlayed a six-run fifth

inning into a 9-3 victory over visiting Laguna Beach in Pacific Coast

League baseball action.

The win gave Calvary Chapel a two-game sweep of the Breakers as

the Eagles scored an 8-5 win at Laguna two days earlier.

The loss was the third straight in PCL play for Laguna, now 3-4.

The Breakers return to action Tuesday at Corona del Mar, then host

the Sea Kings on April 25.

In softball action, Northwood used an 11-run outburst in the

fourth inning to take control of its PCL game at Laguna and beat the

Breakers, 11-3.

Laguna (0-2 in league) scored all three of its runs over the final

two innings. One of those runs came when Hilary Frimond hit a solo

home run in the sixth inning.

The Breakers return to the diamond Tuesday at Calvary Chapel.

In boys’ tennis, Laguna dropped a 12-6 PCL home match to

University.

The Breakers’ No. 2 doubles team of Ivan Kovacevic and Kyle Paxton

swept their Trojan opponents, winning by scores of 6-0, 6-3, 7-6.

Laguna drops to 1-3 in league.

In girls’ soccer, two Laguna athletes were named to the 2003

All-Pacific Coast League team.

Senior Emily Ward was named to the 12-member First Team and senior

Leah Edwards was included on the 12-member Second Team.

The PCL all-league team was dominated by champion Northwood.

Timberwolves’ junior Jessica Johns was named the league’s MVP.
