Lion pitchers throw blanks

* SOFTBALL: No matter who pitched for the Vanguard University
softball team, the result was the same Wednesday: no runs allowed.
Vanguard pitchers Jill Jessen and Celina Camarillo each pitched
shutout victories Wednesday against visiting Whittier in a
nonconference doubleheader. Jessen pitched a one-hit, six-hit shutout
in the second game, an 8-0 triumph. She also sparkled at the plate,
knocking two hits and driving in three runs for the Lions (25-22-1).
Camarillo added two hits and two RBIs while Beth Burchell tallied
three hits in the second game.
Camarillo showed her pitching prowess in a 3-0, three-hit shutout
in the first game. Alison Smidt and Lindsey Dyer each had two hits,
with Smidt knocking a double that drove in one run in Vanguard’s
two-run sixth inning. Rachael Rolle and Jill Ramsey each tallied one
RBI in the hosts’ nine-hit attack.
Whittier falls to 4-29.

* SOFTBALL: Costa Mesa High’s rally came up short, as host
Saddleback won, 2-1, in a Golden West League softball battle for
first place Wednesday.
Trailing, 2-0, Ann Marie Topps smacked her seventh home run of the
season, a solo shot in the top of the sixth. But that would be as
close as the Mustangs (10-6, 4-2 in league) came. Saddleback improved
to 4-2 in league.

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf “A” team finished second
with the “B” team taking fifth in the two-day Tribute to Youth
Tournament in Palm Springs that ended Tuesday.
Robert Ury, Tim Frohling, Brad Chamberlin and Nick Sherman
combined to fire a 273 over the two days to lead the “A” team, which
finished two strokes behind winner Riverside Poly.
Matt Story, Ben Tilsen, Zach Rabinovich and Alex Chikovani
combined for a two-day total of 283 for Coach Mike Starkweather’s Sea
Kings.
Kendall keys OCC win
* GOLF: Behind medalist David Kendall, the Orange Coast College
men’s golf team defeated Golden West, 381-444, in an Orange Empire
Conference match Wednesday on the par-72 Los Serranos Golf Course in
Chino Hills.
Kendall birdied three holes and parred No. 13 to shoot a 1-under
71. He was followed by Brad Champion (76), Kelly Wicks (77), Jared
Bruce (78) and Jason Hethcoat (79).
OCC (12-9, 8-8 in the OEC) next plays Riverside in a conference
match Monday.
UCI overpowers UCR
* TENNIS: Jenny Bowman, Anna Bentzer, Christie Posner and
Veronica Fermin won in singles to help lead the UC Irvine women’s
tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Big West Conference host UC
Riverside Wednesday.
The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 27.
The Anteaters (13-9, 5-2 in conference) won the doubles point,
sweeping the three matches.
UCI’s Turpin sits third
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine junior Annmarie Turpin is in third
place after the first day of competition in the California
Invitational Heptathlon at Azusa Pacific University.
Turpin totaled 3,111 points Wednesday to trail Missouri’s Fionna
Asigbee (3,270) and Abbe Ohneck (3,194) in the 27-athlete field.
Anteater senior Jessica Stafford is in eighth place with 2,911
points.
In Wednesday’s action, Turpin recorded marks of 15.03 in the
100-meter hurdles, 5-7 1/4 in the high jump, 36-6 3/4 in the shot put
and 25.94 in the 200 meters. Stafford had marks of 14.76 in the
hurdles, 5-5 in the high jump, 30-3 1/2 in the shot put and 26.40 in
the 200 meters.
Dons dominate Pirates
* SOFTBALL: Emilee Bodiford smashed a solo home run in the first
inning, but Orange Coast College’s softball team couldn’t keep that
momentum and dropped an Orange Empire Conference game at Santa Ana
Wednesday, 10-2.
Santa Ana’s Elaina Alcaraz improved to 11-2 on the season with a
complete game two-hitter. The Dons (18-17-1, 10-6 in the OEC) pounded
out 13 hits against Coast (9-15, 4-11 in the OEC).

49ers drop ‘Eaters
* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team closed out
their regular season with an 8-2 loss to host Long Beach St., ranked
No. 4, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Wednesday.
The Anteaters (18-20, 1-9 in the MPSF) were led by junior
goalkeeper Sun Chamblee who held the 49ers to a goal in the opening
quarter. UCI junior Rebecca Wedemeyer tied the game at 1-1 in the
second quarter. Long Beach scored two unanswered goals after to take
a 3-1 lead at halftime. The 49ers dominated the second half with six
goals.

Northwood sweeps VU
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s and women’s tennis teams
dropped nonconference matches Tuesday at Northwood University in
Florida.
Calle Mumsden, Calle Holmgren and Philip Mardh earned singles
victories for the Lions in the 5-4 loss.
Olga Hlushchanka won in singles and teamed with Alena Votavova to
win a doubles match in the women’s 7-2 setback.
The Lions’ men are 12-9 and the women are 11-10.
