Home runs were the hit of the day on Friday as three local prep teams
posted key league victories.
During Ocean View’s 11-0 road wipe out of Santa Ana, Jeff Roth hit
two home runs.
Roth hit solo shots in each of the second and third innings as
Ocean View opened up a 9-0 lead.
Phillip Hann started on the mound for the Seahawks and got the
victory and improved his record to 3-1. Mike Collier closed for Hann
and threw the final two innings.
The two combined to two-hit the Saints.
Ocean View racked up 11 hits to remain unbeaten in Golden West
League play and won for the eighth time in nine games overall.
In Sunset League baseball, Brooks Walling delivered a pair of home
runs as Marina blanked visiting Esperanza, 4-0.
Walling connected on his first homer in the second inning to give
the Vikings a 1-0 lead, then hit a two-run shot in the fourth as
Marina scored three more runs to up its advantage to 4-0.
The pitching win went to Wes Etheridge who three-hit the Aztecs in
improving to 3-1.
Marina is ranked sixth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division
I poll.
Edison, although unranked in the poll, remained atop the Sunset
League standings with a 15-1 drubbing of host Los Alamitos. In that
win, Nate Mitani hit a solo homer during a three-run third inning as
the Chargers opened up a 3-0 lead.
Robbie Blauer was perfect at the plate with a four for four
effort.
David Huff (4-1) was the winning pitcher and started in a rotation
that included closer Tommy Grady.
Huntington Beach rallied for five runs in the final two innings to
stun host Fountain Valley, 8-7.
Colin Balester notched the pitching win and improved to 4-1.
In Sunset League softball, Edison posted a 3-2 nonleague victory
over visiting Orange.
Stacy Birk won her eighth game of the season with a two-hitter
that included 17 strikeouts.
In boys’ volleyball, Johnny Roulette’s 17 kills paced unbeaten
Huntington Beach in a key 15-7, 15-17, 15-13, 15-9 Sunset League
victory at Marina.
Huntington Beach was ranked fourth this week in the Division I
poll.
Steve Klosterman recorded 55 kills for Marina.
Ocean View, ranked third in Division III, won its 11th match
overall and remained unbeaten in Golden West League play following a
15-6, 14-16, 15-9, 15-1 win over Saddleback.
In boys’ tennis, No. 1 singles player Ryan Malawy won three games
as Edison remained in first place in the Sunset League standings
following a 15-3 win over visiting Marina. The win was the 10th in 11
games this season for the Chargers, ranked 10th in this week’s
Division I poll.
In Golden West League action, Thomas Nguyen won his three games at
No. 1 singles to lead Ocean View to a 10-8 win at Costa Mesa.
In Sunset League boys’ track and field, Jeff Goddard hit a
personal best 44-feet-7 1/2 in the triple jump and won the high jump
and long jump, and Joe Gatel won the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, to lead Edison in a 72-64 triumph over rival Fountain
Valley.
Marina was a 71-58 winner over Huntington Beach.
In girls’ track and field, Edison downed Fountain Valley, 73-63
and Marina was a 92.5-43.5 winner over Huntington Beach.
