Aliso Niguel ekes out victory over Newport
- Share via
Newport Harbor High pitcher Joey Cantarella allowed just three hits
and shut host Aliso Niguel out the final five innings, but a
three-run burst in the first inning proved decisive as Aliso posted a
3-2 Sea View League baseball victory Tuesday.
Two walks and a one-out double play ball which was thrown away at
first got Aliso Niguel all the offense it would need to improve to
4-2 in league.
R.J. Muller got Newport off on the right foot in the first inning
with a double and Karo Makserjian got him home with a base hit to
left.
The Sailors scored again in the fifth inning when a pair of walks
and a sacrifice bunt by Dave Erickson moved the runners up, followed
by a sacrifice fly from Jeff Sanchez.
Makserjian singled and was on second with one out in the fourth,
and Cantarella was aboard with a one-out walk in the seventh, but
both were stranded.
Cantarella struck out four and walked five as the Sailors fell to
3-10, 1-5 in league.
