Vanguard caught in a freezer

COSTA MESA -- It was too cold on Saturday for the Vanguard University

softball team, in terms of the windy weather and at plate where the

Lions found themselves on the wrong ends of a one-hitter and a

two-hitter.

Riverside-based Cal Baptist recorded 2-0 and 5-0 Golden State

Athletic Conference victories to improve to 34-15, 8-8 in the GSAC,

while dropping the hosts to 22-16-1, 9-10).

Rachael Bermudez limited the Lions to one hit in the opener, a

fifth-inning bunt single by Lisa Jackson.

Lions’ starter Marciea Ball held the Lancer bats in check over the

first four innings, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters she faced.

But she ran into trouble in the fifth when back-to-back singles by

Angela Funk and Maribel Delgadillo was followed by a wind-blown error

to load the bases. Loraine Pinedo followed with a double to right

center to score two runs.

Jamie Beaty was the nemesis on the mound in Game 2, stifling the

Lions through six innings before Ashley Mauro’s grounder to center

and Jackson’s shot down the left-field line broke up the no-hit bid.

Cal Baptist jumped on the Vanguard pitching staff for nine hits,

including six doubles.

The Lions return to GSAC play on Tuesday when they travel to The

Master’s College for a doubleheader, starting at 1:30 p.m.
