Junior Erica Horman scored with 23 seconds remaining in overtime to
lift No. 17 UC Irvine past Cal State Northridge, 4-3, in
non-conference women’s water polo action at the Anteater Aquatics
Complex Friday night. It was the second game of the day for UCI,
which lost 11-3 to No. 2 Stanford earlier Friday.
Northridge’s Erica Bonetti had tied the game on a goal with 23
seconds left in regulation. Both teams went scoreless in the first
three-minute overtime session before Horman got the winner.
Horman led the Anteaters (15-16) with two goals. UCI’s Lauren
Volcan opened the scoring on a goal with 4:27 left in the second
quarter. The Matadors’ Ashley Hunhoff then countered with a goal
before Horman scored to give UCI a 2-1 halftime lead.
Meghan O’Donnell gave the Anteaters a 3-1 lead on a goal with 2:41
left in the third quarter, but Pam Barba drew Northridge (17-5)
within 3-2 on a goal with 1:26 remaining in the third before Bonetti
scored the game-tying goal late in regulation.
Jennifer Moon had 10 saves in goal for UCI.
