Keen pitching pulls Giants through

Eric Holland came up huge when the Giants needed him to.

In the seventh and final inning and the Giants leading by one run,

the first baseman caught a line drive and then tagged a runner out

for an unassisted double play. But he was not done. Holland fielded a

hard-hit ball and touched first for the final out, preserving a 7-6

Giants win over the Red Sox in Newport Harbor Baseball Association

Bronco Division (11-12-year olds) play.

The Giants’ offense broke the game open in the third inning when

they scored four runs and were leading, 7-4, going into the top of

the seventh.

The defense had to hold up and it did.

Giants’ catcher Brett Olinger threw out a runner at second base.

Michael Carscadden, Jake Dawson and Sean Mangano all played strong

defense throughout the game for pitchers Jack Grace, Jacob McCann and

James Cunningham.

Eric Chebil went 3 for 3 while Jake Caughill, Cunningham and

McCann all had RBIs.

Olinger and Cody Holter scored crucial runs for the Giants.

In other Bronco action:

* Cardinals 6, Giants 5

The Cardinals rallied from a 5-4 seventh-inning deficit to eke out

the one-run victory.

The Cards opened the inning with three consecutive hits by Chris

Gowdy, Scott Ward and Connor Bathan. Bathen doubled and Ward stole

home to score the winning run.

Strong pitching by Drew Littlefair, Connor Curry and Ward limited

the Giants, who were undefeated coming into the game.

Curry finished 2 for 3 with one double, two runs scored and

pitched two innings while Gowdy went 2 for 3 with one run scored and

Ward had one hit, one run and threw two innings without allowing a

run.

Bathen went 2 for 3 with a double and a run while Littlefair threw

three solid innings. Victor Done tallied one hit with one run and

played strong defense along with Erik Heimstaedt.

Grace pitched three innings allowing only one run and one hit for

the Giants while Cunningham went 4 for 4 with one double and two

innings pitched.

Chebil had two hits and Jacob McCann added a triple. Holland

pitched two innings.

In Mustang Division (9-10-year-olds) play:

* Indians 12, Astros 3

The Indians broke the game open in the fourth inning with five

runs.

They were led by Zack Porteous and Ted Steffel, who had two hits

each.

Porteous shut down the Astros’ hitting attack with three shut out

innings.

The Astros were led by Austin Metzger’s 3 for 4 performance

including two doubles. Grant Fujii also got a hit.

* Red Sox 3, Diamondbacks 1

Red Sox pitchers Nathan Eon, Robbie Rettig and Colton Gyulay all

helped hold the Diamondbacks to one run. Eon threw three innings

while Gyulay went two and Rettig for one.

Hayden Cornwell had two hits and two RBIs for the Red Sox.

The D-backs were led by pitchers Jamie Davis [eight strikeouts]

and Blake Bell [five strikeouts] and by two hits from Peter Morris.

In the Pinto American (7-8-year-olds) Division:

* The Red Sox played the Yankees Saturday at Newport Heights. The

Red Sox were led by Robert Alexander, who collected a home run and

two singles followed by Spencer Buchanan and Estevan Muniz, who went

3 for 3.

A strong defense by the Red Sox was also on display with Andrew

Chase, Bryan Shollin and Quinci Holgate. Martin Najera Jr., Timothy

McGetrick, Duke Morales and Austin Smith all played well for the Red

Sox.

In Pinto National play:

* The Astros and Diamondbacks tangled at Bob Henry Park with

Astros’ pitchers Blake Pender, Chase Whiting and Jack Ortlieb

combining for a two-hitter.

Nine Astros got hits with Austin Berendes, T.J. Eleinko and Wyett

Muller helping spark the team with their hustle.

Josh Faber turned in a strong performance for the D-backs on the

mound and at the plate.

Strong plays in the field were made by Tyler Kennedy, Paul Tadross

and Brandon Olinger as well.

In Shetland National (6-year-olds) play:

* The Blue Jays and Twins played at Woodland School Saturday.

Joshua Miller went 4 for 4 with two line drives to center field

and Trent Attyah played strong defense at pitcher, contributing to

two outs in the third inning.

Kevin McCarthy drove a ball to the opposite field.

* The Phillies received strong play from Grayson Miller, Harrison

Vandervort, Holt Fundament, Joey Faris and Owen Muller.

Miller stopped a line drive and threw out a runner at first while

Vandervort brought in two runs with a hit. Fundament displayed a

strong arm in left field with Faris bringing in Griffin Sharp with a

hit.

Muller corralled a ball hit into center field and threw to

Josephine Schott at first.
