Blues Clues open with 5-0 victory

The Corona del Mar Blues Clues scored three times in the fourth

quarter to complete a 5-0 shutout of the rival Patriots in girls

under-12 AYSO Silver Select soccer action.

Amanda Johnson and Alexa Cohen scored on crossing passes by

Kathryn Conner and Nikki Flinn.

Claire Schmidt and Conner each scored on breakaways.

The midfield and defense of Taylor Rhodes, McKenna Caskey, goalie

Rebecca Beyer, Kelsey Davis, Erin Epp, Amanda Garrett, Malayna

Kelley, Leila Pozin, Bayli Stefl and Betsy Murray played well.

* The AYSO Region 97 girls under-10 spring select team remains

undefeated after blanking Santa Margarita Saturday, 2-0.

Blakeley Ficenec scored on a rebound from a shot by Natalie Swift.

Claire Silva, Kiana Whipple, Ficenec and Swift continued to

outshoot Santa Margarita throughout the first half.

Amy Kanotz and Tori Sarris helped control the midfield.

Beth Barnard scored on a one-time shot off a throw in by Mary

Yeager.

Sadye Busby, Hannah McLeod and Gwen Gaylord were strong on defense

while Veronica McLean played solid in goal.

* Newport’s boys under-10 team won twice.

Newport blanked North Irvine, 2-0, Saturday with Timmy Root and

Christian Ochoa scoring goals.

Stevie Miller, Root, John Barton and Connor Cooper fired shots on

Irvine’s goalkeeper and were helped on defense by Taylor Wildman,

Sean Regan, Drew Diller and Ivan Becerra. Misha Pakvasa and Tommy

Pickett provided midfield support.

Pickett scored one goal and Miller scored three in Newport’s 4-3

win over Santa Margarita Sunday.
