ON THE AGENDA
Here are a few items the City Council will be considering tonight.
APPEAL OF PLANNING APPLICATION
On Jan. 27, the Planning Commission denied a permit to Jennifer
Simonian to construct a two-story, 6,400-square-foot mini-storage
building on a commercial property in the 1600 block of Tustin Avenue
with an exception from the normal building setback from residential
property. On Feb. 3, Councilman Gary Monahan appealed the decision.
WHAT TO EXPECT
“I think it’ll give an opportunity for the council to look at a
few different options, including rezoning the residential,” Monahan
said. “If it had not been appealed and just flat-out denied, we would
not have options for this particular property.”
APPEAL OF MINOR DESIGN REVIEW
On Jan. 16, the zoning administrator approved a permit for John
Crowe for outdoor storage of vehicles in the 800 block of West 18th
Street. Councilman Allan Mansoor appealed the decision because he
would like to see landscaping added to the general industrial
property to improve the appearance of the location with a 10-foot
landscape setback.
The Planning Commission upheld the zoning administrator’s approval
without requiring the additional landscaping, so Mansoor appealed
again.
WHAT TO EXPECT
“Well, I just want to soften or break up the impact that vehicle
storage is going to have,” Mansoor said. “It’s important to the
Westside. We talk about improving and making the appearance of the
Westside nicer, and I think this is a good place to start.”
2000 GENERAL PLAN
Government code requires that an annual report be made to the City
Council on the status of the plan and progress in its implementation,
including whether its meeting its share of regional housing needs.
WHAT TO EXPECT
“Considering the circumstances, I think [the city is doing its
share],” Monahan said. “We’ve added some units with Standard Pacific.
With 1901 Newport, we’ve added more there, as well, so we’re doing
what we can.”
