Surfers wanted for performance series
Surfers of all ages are wanted to perform in “Mavericks,” which
will be presented April 12 at the Newport Beach Central Library as
part of its 2003 Lecture and Performance Series.

Aviation committee seeks members
Those interested in serving on the city of Newport Beach’s
Aviation Committee have until 4 p.m. March 3 to submit applications
to the city. Applicants must be residents of Newport Beach. Each
council member selects representatives for his own district, and then
the full City Council confirms the nominations.
Applications are available in the city clerk’s office at 3300
Newport Blvd. or by calling (949) 644-3005.

Newport-Mesa says goodbye to Cal Fed
Four Cal Fed Bank branches in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach will
become Citibank branches on March 10.
Citibank West acquired Cal Fed in November.
In December, the troubled lender announced that it would close 30
of the 357 Cal Fed locations across the state.
The local branches, three in Costa Mesa and one in Newport Beach,
will continue operation under the Citibank banner. Cal Fed operated
branches at 2700 Harbor Blvd., 695 Town Center Drive and 1706 Newport
Blvd. in Costa Mesa and at 1100 Newport Center Drive in Newport
Beach.
All employees at the local branches were offered jobs with
Citibank, spokeswoman Janis Tarter said. The bank’s services will be
similar.
Citibank, owned by the world’s No. 1 financial services company,
Citigroup Inc., is the largest bank in the country.
Assistance league gets a little help
The Assistance League of Newport-Mesa received a $5,000 donation
from the PacifiCare Foundation. The money will be used to provide
professional dental care. PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. is one of
the nation’s leading managed health care companies.
Fletcher Jones gets in the spirit of helping
Fletcher Jones is donating $5,000 to help underwrite the 20th
annual Spirit Run at Fashion Island. The Spirit Run will raise money
for Newport Beach’s public elementary schools on Sunday, March 9, at
Fashion Island.
The Mercedes-Benz dealership is also encouraging its 450 employees
to participate and will be furnishing a new Mercedes-Benz M320 sports
utility vehicle as the official pace car. Proceeds from the run will
help science, art and physical education programs.
Newport boat show sails into town soon
Newport Dunes Resort will host the 30th annual Newport In-Water
Boat Show, the largest on the West Coast, April 30 to May 4.
The show will include hundreds of yachts, sportfishers, sailboats,
speedboats, personal watercraft and boating accessories, as well as
some of the most expensive and innovative vessels.
Two tents will house marine accessories and equipment, with
experts to answer questions and give demonstrations.
Admission is is $10 per person, free for children 12 and younger.
Hours are noon to 7 p.m. April 30; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 1 and 2;
10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 3; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 4.

Spread good will at the fairgrounds
A new Goodwill Attended Donation Center has been set up at the
Orange County Fair & Exposition Center at 88 Fair Drive, near gate
two.
The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and
from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
