Purple Piranhas win in shutouts

The Purple Piranhas, a girls’ Under-10 Division soccer team,
posted consecutive shutout victories last weekend in AYSO Region 117
play.
The Purple Piranhas first downed the Cool Kickers, 3-0, and then
came back to topple the Mean Green Fighting Machine, 1-0, in a pair
of matches at Gisler School in Fountain Valley.
In the 3-0 win, Jillian Torrence scored two goals, and Delaney
Glasgow scored once, each set up by strong mid-field passing and
assists by Emily Bush and Katie Philipson.
The defensive play of Katherine and Stephanie Reza helped
goaltenders Allison Gillespie and Jessica Erickson record the
shutout.
Aurora Hess knocked in the game’s lone goal in the final minutes
to lift the Purple Piranhas past the Mean Green Fighting Machine.
Bush, Torrence, Gillespie and Erickson again provided strong
defensive support, and Glasgow, Philipson and Stephanie Reza led the
offensive attack.

UNDER-12 DIVISION
Quick Chicks 1, No Mercy 0
Alison Hensley dribbled through several defenders in the fourth
quarter and sent the winning kick into the net to lead the undefeated
Quick Chicks, who are now 6-0-1.
Hayley Townsend, Christy Verone and Pouneh Radparvar led the Quick
Chick defense, Kimberly Kurdziel, Kailey Ivers and Nicole Cannon
headed up the mid-field, and Jessica Parker, Braelyn Snook, Alex Long
and Cannon paced the offense.
COAST SOCCER LEAGUE
Lightning 5, Cerritos 0
The Lightning, a girls’ Under-17 Silver Division team, extended
its unbeaten streak to seven games Saturday by blanking rival
Cerritos.
The Lightning used four second-half goals to pull away from the
Ladyhawks. Nikki Freiborg and Janet Peterson each scored two goals,
and Beth Santiago scored once.
Megan Bell and Caitlin McGinnis each picked up an assist, and
goalkeeper Gena Johnson collected three saves in notching her second
shutout of the season.
Lightning 2, Fullerton 2
Jill Hribar scored once and had one assist, Lauren Stimmler scored
once, and Beth Santiago picked up an assist as the Lightning fought
the Fusion to a tie.
Bridget Beetler, Tara Fox, Danae Lucas, Hilary Pohlman, Lindsey
Rodgers, Samantha Serrano, Courtney Taniguchi and Krista Thompson
also contributed to the success of the Lightning, who are now 5-1-3
overall and in third place in the league.
BOYS
Under-10 Division
Region 117 Ice Breakers 4, Strikers 2
Gavin Perdomo posted consecutive goals late in the second half to
break a 2-2 tie and send the Ice Breakers on the way to victory.
Forward Michael Rowe put the Ice Breakers on the scoreboard and
into a 1-1 tie early in the second half when he scored off a cross by
fellow forward Matthew Steinhaus.
Steinhaus gave the Ice Breakers their first lead, 2-1, when he
worked his way through the center of the crowd to score.
Garrett Hickman, Mitchell Phillipy and Tommy Vollum contributed to
the Ice Breakers’ offense, and Matthew Bordas, Nick Frens, Cole Souza
and Trevor Verone led the defense.
Frens, Perdomo, Phillipy and Verone rotated in goal.
Under-14 Division
Arsenal 4, Region 56A 2
A quick start propelled Arsenal to the victory.
They opened up a 3-0 lead behind the single goal scoring of Eric
Dyson, John Spirk and Sam Farnsworth. Dyson netted his second goal
just before the halftime whistle.
The Arsenal defense, which went to work in the second half to
preserve the victory, was led by goalkeeper Mitchell Weeks, Connor
Noyes, Brian Tran and James Hensley in the backfield, and Carlos
Puerto, Ibrahim Khalil, Greg Howland, Jimmy Moreno and Val
Bertignolia in the mid-field.
