Unarmed man
robs salon
An unarmed man robbed a beauty salon on Beach Boulevard last week.
The man, posing as a customer, waited for an employee to walk out
of the office where the cash was kept, then rushed in and grabbed a
large sum of money.
The salon employee tried to stop him, but he ran into an alley and
got away. He was accompanied by another man who was seen with him
outside the salon before it opened, Huntington Beach Police Sgt.
Robert Orosco said.
The man was described as being between 30 and 35, with a heavy
build and between 6 feet 3 and 6 feet 6.
The second suspect could only be described as a male about 5 feet
11.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the
Huntington Beach Police Department detective unit at (714) 536-5951.
Police Lt. Hume honored for work
Huntington Beach Police Lt. J.B. Hume was honored with the
Exploring Advisor of the Year award. He is the first recipient of the
award.
Hume has received several other awards for his work as an advisor
of the Exploring Program, which is an extension of the Boy Scouts of
America.
As a result of his leadership more than 85 explorers in the
Huntington Beach Search and Rescue Post have gone on to become
firefighters and police officers.
“That’s kind of impressive and a lot of it has been his effort,”
said Tamara Nale, Exploring Program director with Learning for Life.
“It gives kids an ability to go in and work in an environment that
they might want to work in as a career. It makes them mature and
responsible adults.”
Hume himself is a 38-year member of the Boy Scouts.
“I’m just a big overgrown Boy Scout,” he said.
Police Sgt. Gary Meza nominated Hume for the award because of his
long involvement with the program.
“He was a natural fit for this award,” Meza said.
Many explorers have gone into public safety because of his
guidance, he said.
The turnout at the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa for the
awards last week was a veritable who’s who in Orange County.
Police seeking “Sleepy Bandit”
Police are looking for a bank robber they have dubbed the “Sleepy
Bandit” because he looks like he’s falling asleep. The robber has
robbed a bank in Cypress and one in Huntington Beach. He is described
as being a male in his 30s and is about 5 feet 8 and 180 pounds. He
wears a baseball cap, blue jeans and a dark plaid button-down shirt.
While bank employees have not reported seeing a weapon during the
robberies, authorities still consider the man to be armed and
dangerous and he should not be confronted.
Anyone with information about the “Sleepy Bandit” should contact
FBI Special Agent Ken Stokes (714) 542-8825.
Police thank Toyota for new DARE car
Huntington Beach Police Chief Ron Lowenberg will present Toyota of
Huntington Beach General Manager Bob Miller with a plaque today in
appreciation for the dealerships donation of a 2003 Toyota Matrix.
The car has been decorated with patriotic graphics and will be
used as part of the department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education,
program.
Police departments across the country have similar cars, but this
is the department’s first DARE car.
The DARE program recently survived budget cuts that nearly
eliminated it from city schools. Rather than cutting the program
entirely, the City Council reduced the number of officers involved in
the program and it limited the number of schools that the officers
would work with.
