A hat trick by Jonathan Gordon, a single goal from Tobin Olson and
stellar goaltending from Juan Trujillo netted The Who a 4-2 win over
Costa Mesa in Region 97 boys under-14 action.
Timothy Regan, Christian Harrison and Michael Perkins played
strong defense as did sweeper Brandon Parole. Midfield play was
provided by Vinnie Finn and Nick Normandin as Travis Kuhns provided
additional offensive support.
In boys under-12 play:
* Hurricanes 1, Panthers 1
Defense shined as both the Hurricanes and Panthers played to a
tie.
The Panthers scored first, but the Hurricanes answered right back
with a goal by Robby Hampton off a pass from Easton Giedt.
Steady defense was given by Jordan McLaren and Morgan Lintz, who
both prevented the Panthers from scoring when Panthers’ players were
in front of the net.
Defensive support was provided by Max Collins, Mick Sheehan and
Derek Boler.
In girls under-12 action:
* Red Crush 3, Galaxy Girls 2
Valentina Buonanoce scored two goals and Kayla Henric scored one
goal to lead the Red Crush to the victory.
Rebecca Slater assisted on one of Buonanoce’s scores.
In boys under-10 play:
* Surf Monkeys 6, Jaguars 4
With five first-half goals off the foot of Wyeth Rietveld and a
second-half goal from Trevor Magana, the Surf Monkeys tamed the
Jaguars Saturday.
Fellow attackers Sean Regan and midfielders Patrick Briand, Scott
Mack and Casey Bushing contributed to the Monkeys’ offense.
Rietveld’s four goals were almost matched by Jaguar Matt Mello’s
four goals, as Monkey goalkeeper Garrett Kerr held the Jaguars to
three first-half goals as Kerr was helped defensively by Magana,
Michael Shaw, Dylan Goodman and Willie Pyle.
Bushing and Briand also had time in goal for the Monkeys, shutting
down the Jaguars the rest of the game behind the defensive efforts of
Tyler Smith and midfielder Patrick Conway.
In girls under-10 action:
* Bratz 5, Blue Blasters 3
Two goals each from Courtney McIntosh and Claire Castillo along
with a single goal from Milena Buonanoce (her first of the season)
helped lead the Bratz to a win.
The Bratz scored two second-half goals to break open a close game
as Bratz’ goalkeepers Sophia Leveque and Brenna Landstrom played
solid in goal.
Kelly Kindgren, Alexandra Kehoe, Katie Escher, Zoe Sanglerat and
Madelaine Gallardo also played well.
* Blue Angels 5, Green Hornets 0
The Blue Angels improved to 5-0 on the season with their shutout
victory over the Green Angels.
Two second-half goals from Josie Jogwe gave the Blue Angels
breathing room.
Beth Barnard started the scoring for the Blue Angels with her
fourth goal in three games and moments later Kathryn Zimmerman zipped
a pass in front of the Hornets’ goal to Blakeley Ficenec, who
one-touched it for the second goal.
Zimmerman then scored on an assist from Ficenec before Jogwe
scored both her goals.
* Blue Crush 4, Parrot Heads 1
The Blue Crush, coached by Kelly Berube and Brett Clement, took
care of the Parrot Heads at Harper School.
Erica Wolf, Madison Grant, Allie Pantoskey and Sara Vetrovec all
scored goals for the Blue Crush as Kylie Johnson assisted on
Vetrovec’s goal.
* Teal Tigers 2, Tinee Wahinees 2
The Teal Tigers came back to score two goals to tie the Tinee
Wahinees Saturday.
Both Tiger goals came off the foot of Mary Yeager as Kristi Drake
and Delaney Bell made the assists.
Tabitha Goff made tough saves in net in the first half while
Addison Richley and Kylee Pochirowski split second-half duties in
goal for the Tigers.
Brittney Stair and Yeager defended well as the offense of Abby
Michaelson, Makena Owen and Sadye Busby kept constant pressure on the
Wahinees.
In boys under-10 play:
* Killer Bees 2, Volcanoes 1
In a tightly-fought matchup, the Killer Bees came out winners as
Timmy Root scored both Killer Bee goals, assisted on one goal by
Stefan Nark.
Logan Newett scored the Volcanoes’ goal. Bee goalkeepers included
Vincent Aqueveque, Max Catlin, Jordan Desguin and Timmy Root.
* Fighting Ninjas 4, Soccer Freaks 3
Two first-half goals by Matthew Buchanan and goals from Stevie
Michaelson and Jake Turner propelled the Fighting Ninjas to a win.
Defender Dustin Ayers broke up a number of scoring attacks by the
Soccer Freaks as Cody Caldwell demonstrated effective ball control
and solid defense. Grant Frazier and Taylor Wildman each made several
saves in goal.
* Blue Knights 2, Blue Bombers 0
The Blue Knights scored two quick goals and held off the Blue
Bombers with scoring chances provided by Nolan Mena, David Vorona,
Marco Urquiza, Ethan Murray, Brodi Beal and Nicolas Jaber.
Midfield play was provided by Gus Moore, Slayter Stanley and Marco
Piazza with the defense being led by Kyle Regan, Ryan Davidson and
Jack Murrell.
In boys under-8 play:
* The Newport Beach Hornets and the Speedy Hurricanes dueled and
the Hornets came out strong.
Griffin Leggett and Max Johnson scored goals for the Hornets on
assists from Connor Leggett in the first quarter, Luke Rockwell and
Joshua Bullock in the second, Joshua Eakin in the third and William
Fuchs in the fourth.
Steady defense was provided by Dalton Jensen, Adam Josephson and
Joshua Gutierrez in goal.
In girls under-8 play:
* Sara Hamilton and Delaney McCardle of the Zooming Zebras scored
against the Cubs with strong assists from Cinnamon Sary and Nicole
Fitzsimmons.
The Zebra defense soared with Hana Mumm, Sally Fuller, Kiani
Crivello and Cathryn Boettner.
* The Blue Water Dolphins dueled the Panthers Saturday with the
Dolphin defense led by Carly Christian and Ingrid Peralta.
Defender Jamary Leyva and goalkeeper Nicolette Powell excelled as
the Panther’s attack was led by Natalie Balgie, Lauren Halle and
Katie Gaitan.
In boys under-7 action:
* The Cheetahs and Fireballs dueled in a competitive matchup that
featured Robert Lyons scoring the lone Cheetah goal and the
Fireballs’ Nick Roman netting two goals.
Both teams displayed strong midfield and defense with the
Cheetahs’ Cade Scharnell and Jake Baxter both making stops and then
booting forward passes as Cheetah goalkeeper Nicholas Shallahammerm
snagged a strong shot from the Fireballs.
For the Fireballs, Mario Nack, Mitchell Mendoza, Cameron Hall and
Kody Wensley played steady at midfield as Brandt Bucher, Marcell
DeBarros, Nick Huntley and Brooks O’Hea were fierce attackers. Marc
Gehlke and Daniel O’Toole made big saves on defense.
Conner Tamblyn and Emmanuel Jogwe of the Cheetahs made excellent
moves offensively.
Montgomery Faigan and Mert Kocyigit also played strong defense.
* The Laser Dragons and Tiger Sharks dueled in a spirited game as
forwards Brandon Beck, Joey Gregory, Shaun Vetrovec and Jack
Williamson showed strength on the attack.
Garrett Byers, Ian MacInnis and J.J. Von Ahlefeld turned in solid
defensive and midfield play. Goalkeepers Rian Atherton, Cole Chapin
and Peter Kwock made several saves.
In girls under-7 action:
* The Orange Tigers and Shooting Stars battled Saturday with
Mollie Friend, Katelyn Mead, Nicky Walsh and Reo Nathan leading the
offensive charge that was complemented with a solid defensive effort
from Hailey Smith, Riley Flanagan and Claire Farmer.
* Twins Tory Thomson and Trischa Thomson both scored several
times and Carolyn Bockrath got her first goal of the season for the
Blue Crush as Dana Jessen showed solid footwork.
In boys under-6 play:
* Both the Raptors and the Firestorm fired shots on goal at
Newport Harbor High Saturday, with Christian Urquiza and Nicholas
Perales scoring goals for the Raptors.
Peter Bush, Logan Crider, Matthew Clarkson, Cory Kennedy, Conner
Newcombe and Daniel Ross assisted on the Raptor goals.
Tyler Fowler led the Firestorm in scoring and also assisted Brett
Beaudette in several goals.
Reed Pfeiffer moved the ball across the entire field and nearly
scored an unassisted goal.
* The Green Hornets received one goal apiece from Wyatt DeVine
and Ben Bockrath.
Strong defense was provided by Blake Jessen’s drop kick out of the
goal. Duke Walker, Brian Shaw, Sean Wilson and Matt Wiesner all
showed great teamwork.
