ON THE AGENDA CORONA DEL MAR...

ON THE AGENDA

CORONA DEL MAR BEACH IMPROVEMENTS

Concession stands, restrooms, picnic tables and lighting are some

of the items at Corona del Mar State Beach that eventually will get

improvements if the council approves a contract tonight. The proposed

contract is for $111,670 with Robbins Jorgensen Christopher

Architects to plan a thorough refurbishment of the aging beach

structures. It will pave the way for a later contract for about

$735,000 worth of construction work.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Because the item is on the consent calendar,

council members could approve the contract with little or no

discussion.

JAMBOREE ROAD WIDENING

A longtime plan to widen Jamboree Road between Ford Road and

Bristol Street could get reworked. Council members tonight will vote

on a $32,500 contract with Austin-Foust Assn. to conduct a traffic

study there. Since the 1980s, this stretch of Jamboree has been

slated to be widened to eight lanes. Earlier this year Councilman

Gary Adams pointed out that some improvements that have already been

made to Jamboree over the years could preclude widening the road.

Among the amenities added over the years are a left-turn lane onto

University Drive from Jamboree southbound and a right-turn lane onto

eastbound Eastbluff Drive. These improvements could mean that there’s

no need to plan on widening Jamboree as part of the General Plan

update process.

WHAT TO EXPECT: There is a lot of political will to avoid widening

Jamboree Road, but only a thorough traffic study could verify this

hope. For that reason, it’s likely council members will approve

tonight’s contract.

NEWPORT COAST SLOPES

A $40,000 expenditure could get approved tonight to help fund a

fire department survey of some fire hazards in Newport Coast

WHAT TO EXPECT: Council members are expected to approve the item.

FOURTH OF JULY

The question before the council will be whether to create a July

4th West Newport Safety Planning Committee, which will be charged

with figuring out how to fix problems that have plagued West Newport

in past years.

WHAT TO EXPECT: If council members’ reaction to a police video

last month is any indication, this first step is likely to meet

enthusiastic approval. Once the committee is created, however, the

matter could get more controversial. At the council’s direction, the

committee could consider drastic measures such as prohibiting liquor

sales on the peninsula on the Fourth of July and closing down streets

in the area.
