Vanguard men finish ninth at Fullerton
BREA -- The Vanguard University men’s cross country team finished
ninth in the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener, which featured 14
teams, at Carbon Canyon Regional Park, Saturday.
Junior Tony Magana led the Lions, finishing 24th out of 143
scoring runners. He came in at 25:05.6 on the 8K course. Mikael
Larsson, a Vanguard junior, finished 40th in 26:21.4.
The Stanford men’s team won the invitational, and Bill Sumner’s
Cal Coast club came in second. Sumner coaches the cross country teams
and track and field at Corona del Mar High. UCLA finished third.
On the women’s side, Vanguard did not score as a team because it
was without its fifth runner. Jenny Thune had the highest finish for
the Lions, 44th in 19:24.7.
Sarah Hall followed in 48th in 19:37.7 and Liz Huipe finished 53rd
in 19:43.3.
Stanford won the meet among seven women teams. Freshman Julie
Allen, a Corona del Mar standout, did not compete.
