Manderino scores first college TD
BERKELEY -- Former Newport Harbor High football star Chris
Manderino, who received no Division I-A scholarship offers, scored
his first touchdown in his first start at fullback in UC Berkeley’s
70-22 season-opening victory over visiting Baylor Saturday.
Manderino, a 6-foot-, 220-pound redshirt freshman, extended to
make an 18-yard catch in the end zone that gave the Cal Bears a 42-7
lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Cal quarterback
Kyle Boller set up play action, while Manderino ran an out-and-up
pattern and beat a Baylor linebacker.
Manderino, who amassed 2,141 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns as
senior tailback for the Sailors in 2000, earned a full scholarship
and was named the starting fullback for the Cal Bears earlier in the
week.
He finished with three catches for 41 yards and the touchdown
against Baylor.
