Huntington Beach High will welcome four new varsity coaches this
fall, Athletic Director Dave Van Hoorebeke announced on Tuesday.
Deanna Purdy has been hired to take over the girls’ tennis team. A
graduate of Brigham Young University, Purdy served the past two years
as head tennis coach at Washington Lee High in Arlington, Va. She
will teach math at Huntington Beach.
Peter Muller will step in as the new boys’ water polo coach. He
spent the past year in the boys’ and girls’ water polo programs at
Villa Park High in Orange. Muller is a graduate of UC Irvine where he
was a four-year varsity letterman and captain of the 1994 Anteater
team. Amber Stockstill, a 1998 graduate of Huntington Beach High
School, will coach her alma mater in field hockey. Stockstill
graduated in June from the UC Berkeley where she played four years in
the Golden Bears’ field hockey program.
Finally, Billy McNicol comes to Huntington Beach via Utah to coach
the Oilers’ boys’ soccer team. McNicol has coached soccer for 16
years in Utah, 10 years with the Rowland Hall/St. Mark’s School
program and six at Woods Cross High.
McNicol guided Rowland Hall/St. Mark’s School to eight state
championships in girls’ soccer, and Woods Cross High to five boys’
state titles.
Van Hoorebeke said that the school still is seeking a girls’
varsity golf coach. Interested parties can contact him at (714)
