Harbor hoopsters reunited
Generations came together Saturday for the second annual Newport
Harbor Alumni Basketball Tournament, where alumni from the 1970s
passed to 2002 alumni as players from the ‘80s posted-up on alumni
from the ‘90s.
The mix-and-match format combined players from the ‘70s through
2002 into 10 three- or four-man teams that played five half-court
games.
“Everyone showed up with an excellent attitude, getting to know
people they wouldn’t have gotten to play with, while also guarding
some of the people they played against,” said Tournament Director
Jaime Holmes and a Harbor High ’73 graduate. “It kind of takes the
ego out of it. It was a congenial-type level.”
The games started at 9 a.m. Saturday. After five games, four teams
combined to form two teams of seven to play a full-court championship
game with 15-minute halves.
The team of Greg Perrine (2002), Brian Cottrell, Bob Torribio
(‘95), John Murray (2000), Rich Yardley (‘75), Brian Freeman (‘79)
and Dane Louvier (‘02) beat the team of Steve Bukich (‘74), Cory
Everhart (81), Aaron Yarnal (‘01), Brian O’Flaherty (‘74), Kevin
Seberg (‘81), Eric Dragaset (‘88) and Tony Melum (‘02), 53-44, with a
second-half comeback as Perrine and Freeman were the leading scorers,
Holmes said.
Three generations of Louviers played in the tournament Saturday,
including grandfather Ray, children Norm, Mark and Bruce and Ray’s
grandson Dane.
The tournament generated about $750 to $1,000 for the Newport
Harbor High Basketball Booster Club.
With more and more years under its belt, Holmes said he hopes the
tournament will generate 120 players in 10 years as more alumni read
or hear about it.
“As more and more people hear and talk about it, hopefully it will
grow,” Holmes said.
