Third-seeded Taylynn Snyder, a Corona del Mar High senior in the
fall, has played Dana Point’s Kristen Wilson, a Dana Hills student,
in doubles, but Tuesday was a new experience for both of them.
The two never met in singles action until Tuesday, when they faced
each other in the round of 16 in the girls 18s singles division of
the War by the Shore Junior Tennis Classic at the Balboa Bay Club
Racquet Club.
Snyder proved up to the task, beating Wilson, 6-1, 6-4, battling through some early butterflies.
“I came out nervous, usually the first round is the toughest but I
held serve and I was really aggressive with shots just moving
around,” Snyder said. “I hit solid from the baseline and had some
long ralleys. I just had to put the winners away.”
On occasion Snyder charged the net, which she said she prefers to
do to put away winners. Her serve was also effective.
“If (my net game and serve) are on I usually do pretty well,”
Snyder said.
Snyder faces Santa Ana’s Denise Cockrell in a quarterfinal match
today at 12:30 p.m.
Two other Newport Beach residents advanced to the quarterfinals in
girls 18s singles as Julie Litrich swept through her match with
Newport’s Chelsea Edmonston, 6-0,6-0, and Alexa Glatch advanced for
the second time this tournament by default.
In boys 18s singles Tuesday, Newport Beach’s Kaes Vant’hof beat
Jeff Davidson, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to today’s 12:30 p.m. match against Mission Viejo’s Nicholas Jamros while Robert Khoury won his
second match of the tournament, 6-2, 6-2, over Irvine’s Andrew Cho.
Khoury faces third-seeded Gregory Sturman today at 12:30 p.m.
In girls 16s singles, third-seed Amanda Rubenstein defeated Santa
Barbara’s Morganne Suding, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to quarterfinal
action today at 8 a.m. against Orange’s Laura Robinson.
In girls 14s singles, Miranda Young won her match against fellow
Newport Beach resident Caroline Claure, 6-0, 6-2, and will play today
at 11 a.m. as Sasha Dunlap also won her match, 6-4, 7-5, against
Shayla Henderson. Dunlap also plays at 11 a.m. today.
Also advancing in girls 14s singles is Newport Beach’s Andrea
Zamucen, who beat Newport Beach’s Kelli Kawabe, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Next
up for Zamucen is Santa Ana’s Lisa Hardebeck today at 11 a.m. Jillian
Braverman advanced to today’s 11 a.m. match against Dalya Perelman
after beating Sarah Smetana, 6-2, 6-2 as Sarah Geocaris will also
play today at 11 a.m. against fourth-seeded Brooke Fletcher.
Second-seeded Nelly Radeva of Costa Mesa won her match Tuesday,
6-0, 6-2, and faces Samantha Reeves today at 11 a.m.
In girls 14s doubles, the team of Braverman and Rietsch defeated
fellow Newport Beach duo of Geocaris and Katie McKitterick, 6-3, 6-1
and will next play Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Boys 12s singles has second-seeded Charlie Alvarado of Costa Mesa
advancing after his, 6-1, 6-3, win over Newport’s Chris Damion.
Alvarado plays Coto de Caza’s Nipun Patel today at 2 p.m. Also
playing at 2 p.m. will be Newport Beach’s Daron Arnold, who took care
of Billy Grokenberger, 6-3, 7-6. Newport Beach’s Henri Chomeau will
also pay in the quarterfinals today at 2 p.m. after he beat Justin
Jenkins, 7-5, 6-4, Tuesday.
Chomeau and partner Graham Witherby won their opening doubles
match Tuesday, 6-4, 6-1, and will play the top-seeded duo of Daniel
Ho and Denis Nguyen today at 6:30 p.m.
Two Newport Beach girls advanced to the quarterfinals in girls 12s
singles today at 3:30 p.m. with wins Tuesday. Costa Mesa’s Ellie
Edles defeated Newport Beach’s Claire Lis, 6-1, 6-2.
Up 15-0 and 5-1 in the first set, Edles served up a shot that sent
Lis scrambling toward the corner for a return backhand, but Lis
wasn’t able to convert the shot and Edles had the ace. Edles won two
of the next three points to take the set.
Lis came back strong in the beginning of the second set, pounding
two aces while breaking Edles’ serve once. Edles broke Lis’ serve
twice early in the second set to go up 2-1. Newport Beach’s Isabelle
Platt won her match Tuesday in girls 12s against Kristina Heimstaedt,
6-3, 7-5.
The other Heimstaedt in action Tuesday fared a little better as
Erik Heimstaedt outlasted fellow Newport Beach resident Hunter Meece,
6-4, 7-5, in boys 10s singles and will play Costa Mesa’s Charlie
Corum today at 3:30 p.m.
Even though Meece took advantage of Heimstaedt not standing close
enough to the net on volleys, Heimstaedt managed to survive.
“He found my weakness but I was still able to come back in the
end,” Heimstaedt said afterward, as he wore a black baseball cap
backwards to emulate tennis pro Andy Roddick.
Over in girls 10s singles, Melissa Matsuoka won her match by
default Tuesday and will play Nikki Sanders today at 5 p.m.
