Let’s play some tennis.
That’s what they will be saying many times this week as the annual
War by the Shore Junior Tennis Classic kicks off Monday at the Balboa
Bay Club Racquet Club.
Five Newport area players will compete Monday in the girls 10s
singles, with Newport Coast’s Jung-Yeun Lee facing Huntington Beach’s
Sherilyn Henderson at 3:30 p.m. while Corona del Mar’s Neda Ghassemi
faces Victoria Newman at the same time. Rebecca Arnold has a bye and
will play Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., possibly facing Newport Beach’s
Melissa Matsuoka if Matsuoka wins her first-round match against Long
Beach’s Alex Tachovsky.
Newport Beach’s Meghan Chomeau battles Jessica Parizher at 3:30
p.m. Monday while Balboa’s Hailey Hogan faces Tustin’s Kristen Hibbs.
In girls 12s singles, two opening-round matches on Monday will pit
area players against one another.
Isabelle Platt faces Kristina Heimstaedt at 2 p.m. while Costa
Mesa’s Ellie Edles battles Nicole Legrand at 2 p.m. Sara Legrand,
Margo Pawell, and Claire Lis, all from Newport Beach compete at 2
p.m, while Whitney Griffith and Kay Lin Connolly compete at 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday.
Newport Beach players Nicole and Sara Legrand team up in girls 12s
doubles at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday while Meghan Chomeau and Kristina
Heimstaedt face the second-seeded duo of Catherine Isip and Jordan
Kimura at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
In girls 14s, 17 area athletes will compete in singles play. Costa
Mesa’s Nelly Radeva (No. 2 seed) plays Tuesday at 5 p.m. while
Newport Beach’s Caroline Claure and Brie Whitehead battle at 8 a.m.
Monday. Eight players in the division have a bye and will play
Tuesday including Andrea Zamucen, Kelli Kawabe, Sarah Geocaris,
Elizabeth Van’t Hof, Miranda Young, Cassidy Grandstaff, Sasha Dunlap,
Michelle Atkins and Radeva.
Jennifer Kim, Jillian Braverman, Hayley Young, Carly Adams, Rachel
Haber and Christina Schwartz will be in action Monday.
Both Hayley and Miranda Young compete against Irvine’s Leslie
Bullock and Irena Katzarkov at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday while second-seeded
Jillian Braverman and Claire Rietsch face the fellow Newport Beach
duo of Sarah Geocaris and Katie McKitterick at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Amanda Rubenstein (No. 3 seed) and Jamison Steele (No. 4 seed)
lead the area girls 16s singles group, that also showcases Katie
McKitterick, Vanessa Dunlap, Jessie Slater, Brittany Edmonston,
Kristen Nelson, Diana Khoury and Leigh Fransen.
Three sets of doubles feature both partners from either Newport
Beach or Corona del Mar.
Newport Beach’s Steele teams with Sarah Fansler from Laguna Niguel
as the top-seeded doubles duo in girls 16s.
The team of Edmonston and Nelson play Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. while
Corona del Mar’s Courtney Carnahan and Powers play at the same time.
Danielle Drucker and Sarah Griffith play Thursday at 5 p.m. by virtue
of a bye.
Third-seeded Taylynn Snyder leads the Newport-Mesa contingent in
girls 18s singles, which also features Krista McIntosh, Chelsea
Edmonston and Brittany Minna, who will face each other at 12:30 p.m.
Monday. Julie Litrich, Carmen Khoury, Maggie Suozzi and Alexa Glatch
will also be in action.
Carmen and Diana Khoury will team up in girls 18s doubles as
Snyder partners with Serena Fermin as the top-seeded duo.
On the boys 10s singles side, five area athletes will play Monday
including Alexander Allione, Hunter Meece, Erik Heimstaedt, Brecht
Van’t Hof and Costa Mesa’s Charlie Corum. Troy Arnold plays Tuesday.
Costa Mesa’s Charlie Alvarado (No. 2 seed) leads Newport-Mesa area
boys in the 12s singles division, which also sees Costa Mesa’s
Alexander Grosek face Daron Arnold Monday at 6:30 p.m.Corona del
Mar’s John Leonard. Newport Beach’s Chris Damion, Corona del Mar’s
Omeed Ghassemi, Andrew Singer, Henri and C.J. Chomeau round out the
boys 12s contingent.
Over on the boys 12s doubles side, Ghassemi and Newport beach’s
Eric Chebil will team to face Coto de Caza’s Mishal Patel and Nipun
Patel at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday while Henri and C.J. Chomeau play
Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, with their new partners.
Five area players make up the boys 14s singles, including Ryan
Caughren, Ryan Dupuie, Matt Bernhardt, Ian Connolly and Justin
Shomaker. Jake Fleming and Salem, Oregon’s own Kurt Wheeler team up
as the top seed in boys 14s doubles.
In boys 16s singles, fourth-seeded Jake Fleming battles Corona del
Mar’s Brennan Roberts at 5 p.m. Tuesday while CdM’s Nicholas Gingold
and Charlie Farmer are in action Monday at 5 p.m. CdM’s Daniel Gushue
and Newport Beach’s Dylan Espley-Jones round out the singles draw.
Second-seed Kaes Vant’Hof leads the five area players in the boys
18s draw, that also include Andrew Hinger, Robert Khoury, Patrick
Alearn and Erik Frisbie. as Van’Hof and partner Charlie Farmer team
up in boys 18s double competition.
