Steve Virgen

COSTA MESA - Former Vanguard University star Chad Chop, the

earliest selection in the Major League Baseball Draft in school history,

has earned first-team NAIA All-American honors.

Vanguard standouts Joe Carnahan and Marcus Harris received honorable

mention for All-American honors, while Curt Garner and Sean Moglia earned

NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition.

Chop, the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year who

signed with the Montreal Expos’ Single-A Vermont affiliate last week,

started all but one game for Vanguard. He led the Lions to their first

NAIA Region II championship, hitting .395 with a team-leading 15 home

runs. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound first baseman and outfielder also led the

team in doubles (14), RBIs (67), hits (81) and runs (51).

Chop, the second NAIA player drafted this year, also earned All-GSAC

and All-Region II honors as a senior. He was chosen in the sixth round,

167th overall, by the Expos on June 4.

Carnahan and Harris were also All-GSAC and All-Region II performers.

Carnahan collected 10 home runs, 10 doubles and 38 RBIs in his junior

season.

Harris earned the most wins on the team as a sophomore pitcher. He

went 7-4.

Garner and Moglia also made the GSAC All-Academic team.
