College baseball: Anderson and Swanson, Collegiate Baseball

ANTEATER BALLPARK - UC Irvine first baseman Matt Anderson and
pitcher Glenn Swanson were named to Collegiate Baseball’s “Louisville
Slugger’s” Freshmen All-American Baseball Team Wednesday. Anteater
pitchers Jon Koller and Brett Smith, along with designated hitter R.J.
Brown received honorable mention laurels.
Anderson, a second-team All-Big West Conference performer, led the
team with 91 hits, 57 runs and 28 multiple-hit games, ending the season
with a .381 batting average. His 91 hits put him in UCI’s second spot for
a single-season effort, while his 57 runs helped him to crack the top
five in the single-season record book.
Swanson, a left-hander known as, “Swannie,” on the team,” compiled an
8-5 record and a 4.44 ERA. Swanson, who was solely recruited by UCI Coach
John Savage, collected the team’s only complete game, a two-run, one-hit
performance to earn his second win of the season. Swanson also earned
Baseball America Midseason All-America honors.
Brown, who also earned honorable mention All-Big West recognition, hit
.266, posting 39 RBIS, 17 runs, nine doubles and five home runs,
including the team’s lone grand slam.
Koller, a right-handed reliever, provided the Anteaters with the
team’s second-best ERA, 3.86. He also posted a 4-2 record, striking out
48, while allowing 27 runs on 50 hits in 53.2 innings.
Smith, a starting right-hander, earned a 5-2 record. He was fourth on
the Anteaters in strikeouts (70), averaging 7.4 a game to help Irvine to
a fourth-place tie with Cal State Fullerton in the Big West.
