Johann Appell and Dolly Ginter, both Huntington Beach residents, won
their respective races at last weekend’s Pfizer Flo-Jo Memorial Half
Marathon and 5K held at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna
Hills.
Appell won the Open 5K with a time of 10:02 in a hotly contested run
that saw Riverside’s Bbshir Hassin finish behind Appell by one-tenth of
one second.
Ginter won her race in easier fashion. Her time of 17:48 was 14
seconds better than that of runner-up and hometown athlete, Brooke Thomas
of Laguna Hills.
The win is the second in two years for Ginter at the event as she
captured first place among female competitors in last year’s
half-marathon.
The two-day series of events, which included several children’s races,
a 5K for seniors and older, as well as a health and wellness expo, raised
approximately $125,000.
