Vikings move on to baseball quarterfinals

The Marina High baseball team is playing its best baseball at the
right time of the season.
The Vikings, who needed to win two Sunset League playoff games two
weeks ago just to earn the right to make it into the CIF Southern Section
playoffs, have advanced to Friday’s Division II quarterfinal round by
virtue of a 3-1 second round win over visiting Foothill Tuesday.
Marina turned four double plays, freshman Justin Sellers delivered an
RBI double, and Jason Jordan and Brian Ward each had RBI singles as the
Vikings eliminated the Century League champion and notched their 20th win
of the season.
They opened the playoffs last Friday with a 9-2 triumph at Sierra
League champion Damien. A five-run fourth inning proved to be the
difference in the game, which was highlighted by Daric Barton’s home run.
The Vikings (20-10) will play their third league champion in Friday’s
quarterfinals when they host Channel League winner Santa Barbara (22-5).
Game time is 3:15 p.m.
Edison High senior Rachael Ziemann finished second in the Division I
girls’ high jump event at last weekend’s CIF Southern Section finals. She
will compete Friday at the CIF Masters Meet at Cerritos College. Field
events begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by running events at 6 p.m.
Ziemann will be attempting to earn a spot in the May 31 through June 1 CIF State Meet, also at Cerritos College.
