Newport Harbor High’s Sailors, who finished their Sea View League
championship year undefeated, will host California of Whittier in
Friday’s first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II boys
volleyball playoffs, the section announced Monday.
Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors (24-6), ranked No. 1 in Orange County, are
led by seniors Greg Perrine, Brian Gaeta, Loyd Wright and Erik Peterson,
as well as 6-foot-8 sophomore middle blocker Jamie Diefenbach.
From the Pacific Coast League, third-place Corona del Mar (11-7) will
travel to third-seeded Ocean View, the Golden West League champion,
Friday in the opening round of the CIF Division IV Playoffs.
Coach Steve Conti’s Sea Kings are led by Ryan Inman, John Grod, Kevin
Welch and setter Spencer Miller.
Costa Mesa (10-10) gained an at-large berth in Division IV and will
face host Bishop Montgomery, the Del Rey League champion, Friday. All
matches start at 7 p.m.
The Mustangs are led by Carlos Jaime, Eli Solis and Ed Moreno.
If victorious Newport Harbor would meet the San Clemente-Villa Park
winner. If they get that far, the Sailors could collide with No. 4-seeded
Royal in the May 17 quarterfinals, with top-seeded Mira Costa likely
looming in the May 22 semifinals.
