Tennis: Ball-Snyder win twice at Ojai

OJAI - As expected, Corona del Mar High senior Cameron Ball and
junior Garrett Snyder, seeded No. 1 in the boys CIF Interscholastic
doubles at the 102nd Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament, won their opening two
matches Thursday to highlight area players in the first day of the
largest amateur tennis tournament in the U.S.
Ball and Snyder defeated San Clemente’s Mike Dussinger and John
Sangveraphunsiri in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, then beat Raio Mitsuno and
Soheil Safii of Palisades, 6-0, 6-0, in the Round of 32.
CdM freshman Carsten Ball, playing in the boys CIF Interscholastic
singles (or 18s), lost in the opening round to Hoover’s Dylan Kim, 6-2,
6-1.
In the girls 18s singles, second-seeded and Pepperdine-bound Natalie
Braverman (Newport Beach) had a first-round bye, then defeated Casey
Knuteson (Huntington Beach), 6-0, 6-2, in the Round of 32.
Knuteson beat CdM’s Taylynn Snyder, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round,
while 2000 CIF Southern Section individual champion and Purdue-bound
Brittany Reitz (Newport Coast) had a first-round bye and defaulted in the
second round.
Also in the girls 18s, Krista McIntosh (Costa Mesa) beat Marissa
Simmons of Ojai, 6-3, 6-1, then lost to Kady Pooler of Laguna Niguel,
6-1, 6-3.
Newport Beach’s Brittany Minna won her first-round match, 6-0, 6-1,
over Long Beach’s Melissa Selmanson, then lost to Laguna Beach’s Ashley
Maddocks, 6-1, 6-1.
Newport Beach’s Leslie Damion lost to Colby Comstock of Peninsula,
6-1, 6-4, and Costa Mesa’s Kelly Nelson lost to Santa Barbara’s Courtney
Armstrong, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the boys 16s singles, which features seven area products, two
locals won, another advanced by default (Newport Coast’s Spencer Reitz),
two had first-round byes (Kaes Van’t Hof and Matthew Chou), one lost and
one withdrew (Tyler Deck).
CdM’s Nicholas Gingold knocked off Martin Nunga of Encino, 6-4, 6-1,
in the first round of the 64-player draw, while Newport Beach’s Charlie
Farmer beat Gavin Garrison of Ojai, 6-1, 6-2. CdM’s Wesley Miller lost to
Jordan Colman of Palm Desert, 6-3, 6-4.
In the girls 14s, Jill Damion (Newport Beach) defeated Laura Moses of
Highland, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round of the 32-player draw.
In the men’s community college division, Orange Coast College’s Robert
Chu defeated Palomar’s Jeremy Owens, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to today’s
Round of 32, while OCC’s Zoran Korac beat Kory Rudow of Victor Valley,
6-1, 6-1.
In women’s community college play, OCC’s Stephanie Chang and Veronica
Sommer advanced in doubles with a 6-1, 6-4 second-round victory over
Trisha Gaor and Tina Wu of Mission College.
Chang got past the second round in singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win, while
Sommer was upset in the second round of singles by Carri Barnes of
DeAnza, 6-1, 6-0.
A second-round victim in doubles was Coast’s duo of Kristin Lawson and
Ashley Nelson, who fell to Genie Schnakenberg and Lara Yturriaga of
Cerritos, 6-4, 6-3, after posting a first-round victory over American
River’s Stephanie Alcala and Pamela Coledman, 6-3, 6-1.
In the men’s Big West Conference championships, second-seeded UC
Irvine advanced to today’s semifinals against third-seeded Pacific. UCI
beat UC Riverside, 7-0, without Sean O’Connor playing singles.
In the men’s open doubles, top-seeded Carsten Hoffman (Newport Beach)
and Arthur Hernandez (Huntington Beach) had a bye in the opening round.
In the women’s open singles, Estancia High product Dina Birch-McBride
(circa 1990), seeded No. 1 and the defending champion, will play
Alejandra Ordonez of Mission Hills today in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m.
Birch-McBride, a Woodland Hills resident, had a bye Thursday. Ordonez
advanced when Carpinteria’s Stephanie Baker Stone withdrew because of
injury.
