College softball: Vanguard splits with Lancers

RIVERSIDE - The Vanguard University softball team overcame a
heartbreaking 1-0 loss and reeled off an 8-2 win in a Golden State
Athletic Conference doubleheader with host California Baptist Tuesday.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Cal Baptist
shortstop Brooke Brosterhous pounded an RBI double to end the first game.
Vanguard pitcher Gina Liebengood took the loss, allowing six hits, while
striking out four and walking none in seven innings.
However, Vanguard (33-20-1, 14-8 in the GSAC), ranked No. 20 in the
NAIA, came back in the nightcap, despite commmitting six errors.
Vanguard designated hitter Lauren Manriquez contributed a 2-for-4
performance that came with one run scored and three RBIs, while Cheri
Smith went 2 for 3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Marciea Ball
improved her Vanguard pitching record to 14-9. The Lancers dropped to
35-22, 8-16.
