Fourteen local players nominated for All-Star football game

Fourteen senior football players from Huntington Beach high schools
have been nominated to play for the South squad in the Brea Lions Club
43rd annual Orange County North/South Prep All-Star Football Game, game
officials announced Tuesday.
The game is scheduled for July 12 at Orange Coast College’s LeBard
Stadium. The South will be coached by Mission Viejo High’s Bob Johnson
and the North by Brea Olinda’s Jon Looney.
Eight players were nominated from Edison High including running
back/wide receiver/defensive back A.J. Martinez; wide receiver/defensive
back Denny Flanagan; wide receiver/defensive back Marcus McCutcheon;
running back/defensive back Chuckie Linman; linebacker/fullback Jon
Miller; offensive tackle Ryan Keating; tight end/defensive end Paul
Bartsch and wide receiver/defensive back Pat Campbell.
There were two nominees each from Huntington Beach, Marina and Ocean
View high schools.
Oilers nominated to play in the game included offensive and defensive
lineman Brian Ruziecki and wide receiver/strong safety Josh Morales.
Outside linebacker/strong safety Adam Hayward and running back/defensive
back Turril Engleman were nominated from Marina, and linebacker David
Mullen and wide receiver Matt Byrne were nominated from Ocean View.
Game rules limit a maximum of three players from any one school, with
the exception of up to four players from a school and/or a school with a
kicker. From the list of nominees will come an announced roster of 35
players for the South squad.
A total of 128 players were nominated from 31 schools.
The selection of game coaches and players will be made by the
authority of the game’s selection committee, the Orange County
Sportswriters Assn. and Orange County Youth Foundation.
