Roller Hockey: Newport club maintains first place
- Share via
IRVINE - Orange County’s two powerhouse roller hockey club teams,
Newport Harbor and Fountain Valley, battled in an intense game Tuesday
night. And it was the Newport Harbor club, which was left standing, 4-3,
after Calvin Anderson’s goal off an assist from Vincent Mungo ended the
seesaw action.
Newport Harbor maintains possession of first place in the IHF Varsity
league after wins against Fountain Valley, Santa Margarita, 3-2, and a
tie with Esperanza, 2-2. Newport jumped out to a quick two-goal lead,
when Chase Kelly and Brett Anderson found the net in the first period.
But Fountain Valley tied it up in the second period.
Alex Whitesides put Newport up again, 3-2, with a goal in the second
period.
Fountain Valley tied the game again in the third period, but Anderson
scored the winning goal. Fountain Valley then pulled its goaltender with
less than two minutes remaining. With five attackers on the rink,
Newport’s goalie, David Christiansen, deflected shots that could have
tied the game.
There are two more games left in the IHF Varsity league season, then
the playoffs begin.
