Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

Ty Harper, Mark Hatfield and Matt Larson lead the Corona del Mar High

baseball team to a 9-3 victory over Estancia in the opening round of the

Newport Elks Tournament. Harper and Hatfield combine for four hits and

three RBIs, while Larson sparkles defensively at third base and records

the final five outs on the mound. Ryan Actherberg goes 2 for 3 with one

run for the Sea Kings and senior Royal McMackin goes 2 for 3 with one RBI

and one run. Mario Romo has half of Estancia’s four hits and an RBI,

while Tom Zenus doubles in a run for the Eagles.

The Costa Mesa baseball team produces four errors, but still pulls off

a 6-3 victory over Century. The Mustangs hold comfortable leads of 3-0

and 6-1, while depending on the pitching of senior Al Lambert. Ryan

Gallagher records his team’s first RBI of the season with a single to

left field, scoring Brian Montoya for a 1-0 lead. Lambert finishes with

eight strikeouts and scatters five hits. Costa Mesa catcher Julius

Vasquez goes 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

The Corona del Mar boys volleyball team relies on its talent to break

down visiting Costa Mesa for a 15-3, 15-5, 15-12 win. CdM’s Dennis

Alshuler is instrumental in the win slamming seven kills in leading the

Sea Kings to their Game 2 victory. Greg Burden tallies eight straight

service points to lead Steve Conti’s CdM squad to victory in Game 3. B.J.

Lightvoet is a standout for Costa Mesa.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Matt Palaferri leads the Newport Harbor High baseball team to a 1-0

victory over Estancia in the opening round of the Newport Elks

Tournament. Palaferri, a right-handed pitcher, slams the door shut on the

Eagles with a one-hitter. Palaferri sets the Eagles down 1-2-3 six times

over the course of seven innings, striking out eight and walking just

one. He forces 11 ground balls and allows just three balls out of the

infield. Jose Hernandez collects the lone hit for Estancia. Eagles’

pitcher Kyle Wilson also has a solid outing, giving up one unearned run

on two hits, striking out six and walking two.

The Corona del Mar High baseball team digs down deep to pull out a 7-6

victory over El Modena in the opening round of the Newport Elks

Tournament. The Sea Kings battle back from deficits of 5-1 and 6-5,

scoring the tying and go-ahead runs as a result of a single by Tim

DeCinces and an error by the El Modena right fielder on DeCinces’ hit.

The victory sets up a matchup with Back Bay rival Newport Harbor.

The Newport Harbor boys volleyball team goes the distance to overcome

Edison in five games. Justin McIntee, who records seven of his match-high

26 kills in the fifth game, has five stuff blocks, while 6-foot-7 senior

middle blocker Frank Griffo notches seven stuff blocks and 11 kills. Mark

McAnlis spikes 21 kills and has three digs, and senior setter Russell Gan

dishes out 73 assists.
