NEWPORT BEACH - There is little doubt the Newport Harbor High girls
water polo team will be among the elite again next year because of the
success of the program’s junior varsity squad.
Coach Les Cutler’s Sailors swept through the competition and completed
an undefeated season, 15-0. Sophomore Carolyn Conway led Newport, scoring
86 goals (nearly six goals a game), while junior Alex Anderson scored 25
goals and recorded 21 steals. Junior Tiffany Manderino amassed a
team-high 44 steals, and junior K.T. Adnoff contributed 20 steals.
Even sophomore goalie Terin Cottam was in the scoring department, as
she found the net twice. Cottam also stopped 56 shots.
Peggy Beebe (15 goals and 20 assists), Tyler Candace (13 goals)
Sabrina Cook (13 goals) and Jennifer Scharfe (two goals) also guided the
team to an undefeated season.
The Tars outscored opponents, 206-23, throughout the 15-game season.
Over the last four years Cutler’s junior varsity squads have lost just
two games.
