CIF playoffs: CIF sites determined

- The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team was the only one of
four Newport-Mesa playoff entries to win coin flips Sunday to determine
hosts for Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section playoff contests.
Coach Aaron Chaney’s top-seeded Sea Kings (22-7) will host CIF
Division IV foe Tustin (22-3) in the first half of a semifinal
doubleheader Wednesday, tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. at Irvine’s
Heritage Park.
Chaney said final verification of the site was not expected until at
least today. He said the other Division IV semifinal, between El Dorado
and University, would follow at the same site.
Newport Harbor’s girls water polo squad, the No. 3 seed, lost a coin
flip to pick the alternate site for its semifinal Wednesday against No.
2-seeded Foothill. Coach Bill Barnett’s Sailors (23-6) will attempt to
knock off the Knights (24-2) at 3 p.m. at Tustin High. Barnett said
Sunday he did not know if a doubleheader with the other Division I
semifinal between Santa Margarita and Long Beach Wilson was being
planned.
Girls soccer teams from Newport Harbor and Costa Mesa lost coin flips
and will be on the road for Wednesday’s second round, while CdM will also
ride the bus to its second-round match.
Newport Harbor (12-6-4), the No. 3 seed, visits Riverside Poly
(16-3-7) in a Division II game at 3 p.m.
Costa Mesa (13-5-4) ventures to Woodland Hills to play Division IV foe
Louisville (18-5-1), which shared the Division IV championship last year,
at 3 p.m.
Corona del Mar (13-4-7), the No. 4 seed in Division IV, will travel to
Pomona to face Ganesha (16-7-1) at 3 p.m.
In playoff action Tuesday, the Newport Harbor boys basketball team
(20-6) will host No. 3-seeded Villa Park (25-3) in a CIF Division II-AA
second-round clash. Newport Coach Larry Hirst said Sailor supporters
should plan on arriving well before tipoff to insure obtaining a seat,
since Villa Park is expected to bring a big contingent. With no school
Monday or Tuesday, presale ticket sales will not be held, so tickets will
be available at the door on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Newport Harbor boys soccer team (10-7-2) will host top-seeded Los
Alamitos (23-1-1) in a second-round CIF Division II clash at 3 p.m. in
the school’s football stadium.
Costa Mesa’s Pacific Coast League boys soccer champions (14-3-3), the
No. 3 seed in CIF Division IV, will visit Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks
(14-3-5) for a 3 p.m. second-round game.
