NEWPORT COAST - The Sage Hill High boys basketball team just missed
a chance to move into a second-place tie and now must battle next week
for third after a 47-45 Academy League home loss Friday to St.
Margaret’s.
Trailing, 41-31, heading into the fourth quarter, the Lightning (7-8,
4-4) rallied to tie it at 45 with 38 seconds left on an Erik Williams
field goal.
Sage Hill forced misses on two subsequent St. Margaret’s possessions,
but each time the rebound trickled off a Sage Hill player’s hands, giving
the Tartans possession.
St. Margaret’s collected the second loose ball and Jeff Schafer fed it
inside to Ninyus Youkhannett, who made a layup with one second left for
the victory.
Mike Fitzhugh led Sage Hill with 25 points and eight rebounds.
The win improved St. Margaret’s to 6-2 in league.
Sage Hill visits Oxford Academy Monday, then hosts Brethren Christian,
with which is is now tied for third, Thursday in what figures to be a
showdown for the league’s third guaranteed berth into the CIF Southern
Section playoffs.
