Wrestling: Shipman leads the way

COSTA MESA - Corona del Mar High senior Steve Shipman finished
sixth after Saturday’s action in the Estancia Wrestling Tournament.
Shipman, who wrestled in the 215-pound weight class, inched past the
second round of consolation with a 4-3 decision, then followed it up with
a 4-2 result in the quarterfinals. He lost, 9-2, in the consolation
semifinals and lost, 8-3, in the fifth-place match.
In the 125-pound division, crosstown rivals squared off and Estancia
junior Victor Carmona defeated Costa Mesa sophomore Silvio Estrada, 16-9,
in the second round of consolation. Carmona then lost in the
quarterfinals, 13-8.
Estancia junior Jeeandy Morales (130), along with Costa Mesa senior
Doug Amburgey (140) and juniors Matt Grubisich (130) and Adam Donovan
(135) did not advance to the consolation quarterfinals.
Centennial of Corona won the tournament, which featured 45 schools
competing at Estancia High. The Huskies edged second-place El Dorado,
231-225.5. Arroyo came in third with 120 points.
