HB Energy captures AYSO Plus Tourney

HB Energy, a girls’ Under-12 Division team from North Huntington Beach
Region 55, ended its fall season Sunday by winning the Southern
California AYSO Plus Tournament.
The Energy defeated Mission Viejo in the final, 3-0, behind a
three-goal effort from Mariah Nogueira. Sarah Foster recorded her fourth
shutout during the weekend-long tournament in Irvine.
The victory avenged a 3-0 defeat to Mission Viejo during the regular
season, the only blemish on the Energy’s record.
They opened tournament play with wins over Aliso Viejo and Long Beach
in pool play Saturday, then followed those with a 4-0 blanking of San
Juan Capistrano in semifinal play.
Coached by Mike Edwards, Rueben Nogueira and Maggie Holland, HB Energy
is also comprised of Kelly Cuadras, Alex Edwards, Jennifer Globe,
Marilena Guadagnini, Clarissa Holz, Colleen Kustura, Nicole Luby, Shima
Nooryzadeh, Yesenia Ocampo, Natalie Peterson, Brianna Smith, Giana
Sortino and Katie Welch.
SH/ Hornets claim third place
The Hornets claimed third place in AYSO Region 55 girls’ Under-10
Division play by defeating the Huntington Beach Breakers in overtime,
2-1, in a regular season finale.
Nicole Smith scored off a Kimya Jafroudi assist to break a scoreless
tie in the third period. The Breakers earned a 1-1 tie in the fourth
quarter on a Katie Morrow goal, her first of the season, which came off a
Emily Peterson feed.
Tied through regulation, the two teams headed to a mandatory overtime
that featured two, five-minute periods. It was there thta Alyssa Duren
scored unassisted to lift the Hornets to victory.
The defensive battle featured strong play in goal by Chanelle Neal and
Christina Blank of the Hornets and Rachel Luby and Madison Mulcahy of the
Breakers.
“All of the girls contributed to this win and I’m proud of their
performance,” said Hornet coach Mike Anderson.
Other members of the Hornets include Lauren Anderson, Breanne Basom,
Halle Bissin, Lindsay Conlisk, Katelyn Gonzalez, Kaycee Rogers and
Kristina Snyder.
