Girls basketball: Eagles notch big win

MISSION VIEJO - The Estancia High girls basketball team defeated El
Toro, 45-33, in a pool-play game of the Jim Hill Memorial Tournament
Wednesday at Mission Viejo High.
The win avenged a 50-42 loss to El Toro (7-4) in the Eagles’ second
game of the season.
Junior Xochitl Byfield scored eight of her team’s 10 first-quarter points and finished with a game-high 20, including four three-pointers,
to pace Estancia (3-5).
Tisha Gray chipped in 15 points and Trisha Wase added eight for the
winners.
“El Toro didn’t shoot very well against our zone,” Estancia Coach Paul
Kirby said. “This was a good win for us, especially since they had
already beaten us.”
Estancia, which hosts Notre Dame Academy in a nonleague clash tonight
at 5:30, concludes pool play Friday at 4 p.m. against West Torrance,
which was beaten by El Toro Monday.
If Estancia beats West Torrance, it would win Pool B and play the
winner of Pool A in Saturday’s 5 p.m. championship game.
