NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team ended
a 19-game losing streak in commanding fashion Friday, routing nonleague
visitor Centennial of Compton, 63-14.
Sophomore Jilliane Whitfield had a game-high 15 points and junior
Lindsey Woller added 12 for the Sailors (1-6), who bolted to a 24-3
first-quarter lead and kept right on going.
“There were some points where we got a little lazy and sloppy, but we
seemed to pick it up again,” Newport Coach Jen Thompson said.
Evita Castillo added eight points and Athena Vasquez chipped in seven
for the winners, who open the Mission Viejo Tournament Monday at 4 p.m.
with a pool-play clash against Estancia.
The Sailors dropped a 49-30 nonleague decision to the Eagles Dec. 6.
“Our girls are looking forward to (Monday’s) game,” Thompson said.
