Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The season ends on a down note for the Newport Harbor High football

team, which loses to Santa Margarita, 38-0, in the CIF Southern Section

Division V championship game, in front of 8,000 at Cal State Fullerton.

The Sailors’ season includes the second-most wins Harbor’s 66-season

history (12) and a school and Newport-Mesa district record 493 points

scored. Newport tailback Ray Ohrel runs for 119 yards on 23 carries in

the title game, for a school record 2,082 yards.

The Newport Harbor boys soccer team shuts out Costa Mesa, 3-0.

Mustangs goalie Carlos Loza prevents further damage with a 17-save

performance. Garrett Jansma scores twice in the second half, while Manuel

Opresso boots in a goal in the first.

Lindsey Grubbs strikes for two goals in the second half to lead the

Corona del Mar High girls soccer team to a 3-1 victory in the first round

of the Magnolia Tournament. Heather Marshall converts a penalty kick to

give the Sea Kings a 1-0 lead.

Newport Harbor’s Breanna Badorek scores 15 points, grabs 10 rebounds

and records three steals to lead the Sailors girls basketball team to a

60-38 win over Villa Park to advance to the fifth-place game in the South

Coast Tournament. M.E. Clayton adds 12 points, while Katie Dunne scores

seven and grabs seven rebounds.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team claims the state title with

a 3-1 triumph over Irvine Valley. The Pirates score their three goals in

a 13-minute span of the first half. Darin Courter, who also contributes a

pair of assists, Lance Barker and Brian Slayback score one goal each. It

is OCC’s second state crown in three years.

The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team provide thrills but lose,

58-57, in overtime to Huntington Beach in the final of the Daily Pilot

Tip-off Classic. Newport’s Justin McIntee scores 25 points and grabs 11

rebounds to earn the tournament’s co-Most Valuable Player award.

Huntington Beach’s Tony Gonzalez, now a Pro Bowl tight end with the NFL’s

Kansas City Chiefs, grabs a defensive rebound with six seconds left to

send the game into overtime. He almost wins the game before overtime but

he misses the front end of a one-and-one.

Jason Boyce scores three goals and Travis Grant adds two to lead the

Corona del Mar High boys soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Trabuco Hills

to advance to the final of the Irvine Tournament. CdM’s Scott English

also scores as the Sea Kings break open a match that is only 1-0 at

halftime.

Newport Harbor’s Brandon Finney is named the Sea View League’s

offensive Most Valuable Player after rushing for 1,194 yards and 1

touchdowns on 254 carries (4.7 yards per carry). One of the reasons

Finney wins the honor is because of his offensive guard Marc Barton, who

earns first-team recognition.
