IRVINE - The Vanguard University men’s basketball team missed two
free throws in the final minute and a three-point attempt at the buzzer
while going for the win as host Concordia held on for a 74-72 victory in
a Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday night.
Tanner Luster scored for Concordia (5-3, 2-1 in the GSAC) with less
than a minute remaining to put the Eagles in front, 72-70, but VU’s
Damion Morbley missed a pair at the foul line and the Eagles built a
four-point lead when Rhett Soliday hit two from the charity stripe in the
closing seconds.
Morbley scored on the Lions’ next trip down and was fouled on a layup,
but missed the free throw. Shawn Corkery’s three-point attempt for VU in
the game’s last series was off the mark, sealing Concordia’s win.
The Lions, who enjoyed a 37-32 halftime lead, were led by Shane McKim
(15 points off the bench), Morbley (13) and Josh Pierson (12), whose
three-pointer tied the game, 70-70, with one minute left.
Soliday led Concordia with 17 points, while Chris Weaver chipped in
with 16 points and seven rebounds. Morbley had 14 rebounds for VU.
