Boys soccer: Eagles learning lessons

ANAHEIM - The Estancia High Eagles learned they still have some
growing up to do after a 4-1 nonleague boys soccer loss at Servite
Friday.
The Friars (2-0) took advantage of the Eagles’ frustration with the
officials. One red card and two yellow cards were assessed against
Estancia in the second half, when Servite outshot the Eagles, 11-3.
Servite scored three goals to Estancia’s one over the final 45
minutes.
Down, 2-0, Estancia sophomore Noe Martinez fed a pass to Nikolia
Doudtchenko, who sped toward Servite’s net and drew a foul in box.
Martinez then shot successfully on the penalty kick in the 45th minute.
But after Estancia was charged with a red card, then later a yellow,
Servite senior Anthony Giusiana scored on a rebound in the 65th minute,
giving the hosts a 3-1 edge. And seven minutes later, after an Estancia
yellow card, Servite senior Anthony Herrera found the back of the net
from 15 yards out for the margin of victory.
“I saw it,” Estancia assistant coach Armando Ortiz said of the play
that drew a red card on Abdul Kaiyum. “The Servite player grabbed at
Abdul and (Kaiyum) gave a little elbow back. We get the free ball and our
player gets a red card? How’s that?”
Ortiz, who played for the Eagles last year, was charged with a yellow
card for asking the officials to call fouls both ways.
After the game, while Estancia head coach Steve Crenshaw dealt a
lengthy postgame speech to his players, Ortiz was asked to leave the
field by the officials. During the junior varsity game, Ortiz argued with
an official because of a no-call after an Estancia player was stepped on
the groin while he was on the ground.
“How could you not see that?” Ortiz asked the same official, which
gave him a yellow card earlier. “Do you need glasses?” Ortiz then left
the field quietly.
