COSTA MESA - For the second time this season Matt Hess has been
named the Golden State Athletic Conference and Region II Men’s Soccer
Player of the Week, as well as Vanguard University’s own Lion of the
Week.
Hess, a freshman forward, scored three goals and recorded two assists
last week to catapult the Lions to victories in the final two games of
the season.
In Vanguard’s first game last week, Hess put the final touch on a
comeback over Point Loma Nazarene.
Trailing 3-1 late in the second half, the Lions scored two goals to
tie the game and set the stage for Hess’ heroics.
In the 86th minute, Vanguard’s scoring leader converted the
game-winning goal to give the Lions a 4-3 win over PLNU, the team that
knocked Vanguard out of the playoffs last season.
Hess then led the offensive charge over Hope International University
with two goals and two assists as the Lions prevailed 5-0 to end the
season Saturday.
Hess scored a team-high 15 goals and dished out five assists this
season.
The Lions finished strong, winning four of their last five games, and
ended with a 7-11-1 overall record.
