COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University men’s soccer team stormed back
from a 2-0 halftime deficit to record a 4-3 Golden State Athletic
Conference victory over visiting Point Loma Nazarene Wednesday.
Tomas Serna pulled the Lions within, 2-1, when he scored less than
five minutes into the second half. Freshman Matt Hess dished out the
assist on Serna’s third goal of the season.
However, the Crusaders (7-9, 4-5 in the GSAC) answered with a goal in
the 65th minute, to take a 3-1 lead.
Vanguard (6-11-1, 3-6) retaliated with three unanswered goals in the
final 19 minutes. Serna started the comeback with his second goal of the
game. With six minutes remaining, defender Ryan Sullivan scored his first
goal of the season to tie the game. Then Hess delivered the game winner
with 4:10 left. Sophomore Beau Lawson earned assists on each of the final
three goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Tommaso Bianchi anchored the defense with seven
saves.
The Lions will end the season with a game at Hope International
Saturday.
