Newport Beach City Council preview

-- Compiled by June Casagrande

Beach Restroom improvements

After approving funds at their last meeting to fix up certain

bathrooms on the beach, council members are expected to decide tonight

whether to do the same for two more restrooms. The council will consider

a contract for $531,300 with Klassic Inc. to demolish and then rebuild

restrooms at Washington Street and at Balboa Pier.

What to expect: The council is expected to approve the contract

with Klassic, which was the lowest bidder of 10 for the job. Funds from

the American Trader Oil spill settlement will pay for the Balboa Pier

restroom. Money for the Washington Street facility will come from the

Facilities Rehabilitation and Remodeling Program.

Parking time limit on St. James Road

Two-hour parking limits throughout the Cliff Haven area were

implemented earlier this year after residents complained that high school

students were parking there. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, parking on

certain streets is limited to two hours. But, according to one resident,

not every street needs the restrictions. Specifically, the council will

consider changing the sign about parking on the south side of St. James

Road to restrict parking “from 15th Street to and including 636 St. James

Road.”

What to expect: The council is expected to approve the change.

Balboa Library

Aging electrical circuits and heating units in the Balboa Library will

be brought up to code if council members approve a $106,500 contract with

Abeam Construction for the work.

Sh What to expect: The council is expected to approve the contract.

Workers will remove overhead electrical installations and bring

underground service into the existing electrical panel for Fire Station

No. 3. They will also install five new heating, ventilation and air

conditioning units, along with other upgrades.

Harbor Committee appointment

Richard Stevens is the mayor’s nominee for the Harbor Committee, an ad

hoc citizens advisory committee for harbor issues. The council will vote

tonight on his appointment.
