Colleges: Men’s soccer keeps on winning

The UCI men’s soccer team is on a roll. Here’s a look at the

Anteaters by the numbers.

1 - The place the team is in after beating Cal State Fullerton Sunday

to improve to 7-3-4, 3-0-1 in conference.

2 - The number of times Jon Spencer has been named Big West Conference

Player of the Week in the past two weeks.

3 - The number of times Scott Bowman scored in the Anteaters’ victory

over the Titans.

4 - Number of ties the team has this season and number of home games

the team has left.

5 - Other schools in the Big West Conference.

6 - Number of Big West Conference games the team has left and number

of seniors on the team.

7 - Number of wins the team has overall.

8 - Number of returning starters.

9 - Add ten to equal the number of returning letterman on coach George

Kuntz’s squad.

10 - Number worn by Spencer, one of the Anteaters’ leading players. He

led the team in points with 30 last season and is racking them up this

year. He has 11 points to lead the team.

And, finally, saving the best for last:

Zero - That’s how many conference losses the Anteaters hope to have by

the end of the season.

UCI fans will have a chance to show their spirit when soccer players

from the women’s team will team up with members of the San Diego Spirit

for “Break the Record Night” Friday at 7 p.m.

The Anteaters (6-5-1, 3-1-1) will host UC Santa Barbara in a Big West

Conference match at Anteater Stadium.

Mercy Akide, Jen Mascaro, Holly Pierce, Rhiannon Tanaka and Margaret

Tietjen from the San Diego Spirit women’s professional team will be on

hand to pass out gifts at the entrance gate before the game. The players

will also sign autographs from 6-7:15 p.m.

UCI will be looking to break its home attendance record for a single

game set Oct. 15, 1999, when 1,008 watched UCI defeat Pacific, 2-1.

The UCI women’s volleyball team has struggled as of late. The team

lost to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday night in three games. The

Anteaters fell to 2-15, 0-9 in conference. The team will look to rebound

against UC Riverside in a road game Friday at 7 p.m.

In other college news, Vanguard cross country runner Robbie Jones

earned a spot on the All-Golden State Athletic Conference team with his

11th-place finish at the GSAC championships Saturday.

The Lions travel to Fresno Pacific Nov. 3 for the Regional Cross

Country Championships. The NAIA National Championship will begin in

Kenosha, Wisc. on Nov. 17.
