Girls volleyball: Newport eighth in tourney

SANTA BARBARA - The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team

finished eighth out of 16 teams in the Santa Barbara Tournament of

Champions Saturday.

Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors (15-8) lost two hard-fought matches,

starting with a five-game setback to St. Mary’s (San Jose), which won

5-15, 8-15, 15-11, 16-14, 15-13. Kristin McClune led the Sailors with 14

kills, while senior Liz Lord tallied 13 and Alyson Jennings and Andrea

Trinen contributed 12 kills each. Senior Christine Woller had 10 kills.

Newport lost in the seventh-place game to Centennial (Bakersfield),

which won 15-5, 15-11, 11-15, 15-10. McClune paced the Sailors again with

14 kills, while Woller tacked on 12 and Jennings slammed nine.
