Pop Warner Football: Late touchdown lifts Mustangs

The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Pee Wee Mustangs earned a 12-6 victory
over the Lakewood Huskies in football action on Saturday.
With the game tied, 6-6, in the fourth quarter and less than five
minutes to play, the Mustangs got into punt formation, but quarterback
Ian Abernathy passed the ball to Cody Matthews who ran 95 yards for a
touchdown to put the Mustangs ahead.
With 1:41 remaining in the game, the Huskies threatened to score at
the Costa Mesa 5-yard line. A false start pushed them back to the 10-yard
line and Matthews intercepted a pass to stop the Huskies and secure the
victory for the Mustangs.
Matthews had four interceptions in the game. Antwon Byrd (90 yards, 5
carries) got the Mustangs going early with a 75-yard touchdown.
Cody Fairfield (95 yards, 10 carries) also contributed on offense.
In other Pop Warner football action:
* Junior Pee Wee Black Mustangs 22, Santa Ana Redskins 7 - Josh Erno,
Roland Wood and Andrew Millian scored touchdowns for the Mustangs. Bobby
Lenke kicked two successful extra points. Millian returned as quarterback
after missing two weeks due to illness. Lenke also played quarterback for
a few plays. Omar Luna, Daniel Lindquist, Keanu Asuega, Joseph Galvez,
Daniel Derieg, Manuel Gomez and Jim Swantusch contributed on defense.
Millian made a 20-yard pass for Wood’s touchdown to highlight his
stint at quarterback. Swantusch, Asuega, Erno and Dillan Gray recovered
fumbles. Millian had 78 yards rushing to lead the team. Jesse Dawson had
40 yards rushing and Erno piled up 30 yards.
* Mighty Mites 38, Fullerton Rams 12 - Derek Amendola rushed for two
touchdowns and Mac Contgreras scored two TDs, one on a kickoff return.
Jake Ferris also had a 55-yard touchdown run.
Shane Davis, Zac Vayda, Dave Griffin, Justin Hobbs, Jack Jeffries,
Adam Spies, Kevin Salyer, Ryan Webber, Zach Bateman, James Lewis and
Dakota Gilbert were all strong defensively.
