Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

It’s the Danny Pulido and Ray Ohrel show as the two stars lead the

Newport Harbor High football team to a 43-0 victory over visiting

Torrance. Pulido and Ohrel account for all of the Sailors’ touchdowns.

Pulido, the wide receiver, scores the first two on 33- and 25-yard

touchdown receptions on passes from Josiah Fredricksen. Pulido completes

his performance, finishing with four catches for 96 yards. Ohrel scores

the Tars’ final four touchdowns on runs of 50, 29, 9 and 11. He churns

193 yards on 13 carries.

The Corona del Mar cross country girls team post a dramatic 28-27

shocker over Santa Margarita. The Sea Kings take the third-, fourth-,

fifth-, seventh- and eighth-place finishes to score the upset, as Santa

Margarita feature the top two runners in the county in Katie Naunes

(18:02) and Dani Rope (18:50). But CdM answers with Jennifer Morgan

(18:50), Vanessa Jamison (19:32), Liz Morse (19:39), Jennifer Blair

(20:12) and Adrienne Dubin (20:18) to edge the defending CIF Southern

Section Division II champions.

The Estancia football team rambles for a 41-14 victory over Calvary

Chapel. The Eagles use a dominating running game to improve to 3-0 on the

season. Chris Felix runs for 112 yards and three touchdowns on just six

carries. James Dawkins scores on an 89-yard kickoff return to set off a

33-0 run, which features two Felix TD runs of 53 and 6 and ends with

Dawkins’ 49-yard touchdown jaunt. Dawkins tacks on 143 yards on 16

carries and that one touchdown to help out in the rushing effort.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Even 10 years ago, the Corona del Mar High girls cross country team

dominated the opposition. In the Woodbridge Invitational -- the second

largest invitational in the state with more than 5,000 runners competing,

the Sea Kings score the highest marks, finishing first for small schools

with 117 points.

The Newport Harbor football team is upset by host Huntington Beach,

6-0. “They kicked our butts,” says Sailors’ Coach Jeff Brinkley. “We

played great defense, but we couldn’t block them. That was one of the

fundamentals we worked on, but we couldn’t get it done.” The Tars can’t

get much done on offense, totaling 70 yards rushing, after averaging 232

yards rushing in their first two victories.

The Costa Mesa defense keys a 29-12 high school football victory over

Los Amigos. The Mustangs force six fumbles and recover all of them to

turn the Lobos’ dreams into a nightmare. Los Amigos nets three yards of

offense in the second half. Don Hill, Jim Schwab, Bryan Luxembourger, Joe

Yarak and Mike Cota pounce on loose balls. Fernando Opina runs for 112

yards and one touchdown to spark the offense.

The Corona del Mar football team misses out on a chance to defeat

Estancia and the two teams tie, 13-13. With 3:14 remaining, the Sea Kings

miss the go-ahead PAT. The Eagles dominate the game statistically as they

outrush CdM 185 yards to 18. Estancia fullback Nelson Olshefski gains 97

yards on 23 carries. But, in the fourth quarter, CdM travels 69 yards in

nine plays on its game-tying drive as quarterback Todd Kehrli caps the

march with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Wegener.
