Golf: Towersey reaches quarterfinals at U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur
Championship
Richard Dunn
SEWICKLEY, Pa. - Marianne Towersey of Newport Beach, the longtime
women’s club champion at Santa Ana Country Club, reached the
quarterfinals at the 40th annual U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur
Championship, but faced the two-time defending champion Wednesday and was
eliminated, 5 and 4, at the par-73, 5,737-yard Allegheny Country Club.
Towersey, who turned 50 this year and is playing in the event for the
first time, earned medalist honors Sunday after shooting a two-round 144,
the lowest score by four strokes and 12 shots ahead of Carol Semple
Thompson.
Thompson, playing at her home club, defeated Towersey and will be
seeking her third straight U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur title today. She
will face Elizabeth Haines of Gladwyne, Pa., in the semifinals.
