Congratulations to the Seaview Majors division and Huntington Valley

9/10 division Little League All-Star teams for winning District 62

championships. Both teams defeated worthy opponents (Fountain Valley and

Ocean View, respectively) to win banner ownership rights.Seaview’s 9/10

team did it the hard way, too, winning six consecutive games following a

first round defeat, in the double-elimination event.

Now that the 2001 Little League season is over on the local front,

surfing resumes center stage in Huntington Beach. Come Monday, the

$240,000 Philips Fusion will hit the sands by the pier. Over the course

of seven days, visitors will be able to take in more than 600 world-class

athletes competing in surfing, bicycle freestyle, skateboarding and

inline skating.

The U.S. Open of Surfing is a six-star World Qualifying Series event,

and annually attracts more men and women competitors than any other pro

surfing competition in the world.

Can’t say there isn’t anything else to do in Surf City next week.

And, it won’t cost you a dime (you should know better -- beach parking is

NEVER free).

In addition to Ryan Simmons, who is featured on this page as a top

World Championship Tour contender, Huntington Beach’s Jeff Deffenbaugh is

also set to compete. In 1995, Deffenbaugh made quite a splash at the

event and earned his way onto the WCT. He’s looking to return to the

tour.

Once the U.S. Open of Surfing packs up for another year, one Surf City

staple, the Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series, will hold its next event

Aug. 11-12 at 9th Street. Interested competitors are encouraged to sign

up early. Entry forms are available at most surf shops or by calling

596-5019. The single rated event features a $1,000 first place prize for

the Pro/Am winner.

The feature article the Independent ran on Trevor Schulte last week

has received a lot of attention. All of it good, for the “Coma Kid” who

has become the “Comeback Kid.” Way to go, Trevor.

Last weekend in Stockton, the South Huntington Beach Breakers won the

championship of the Pacific Coast Regional National Qualifier tournament.

A sanctioned 14-and-under girls’ traveling team, the Breakers now will

travel to Broken Arrow, Okla. Sunday to compete for the national

championship.

South Huntington Beach will take a 73-16-4 record into the tournament,

which will run through Aug. 6.

The South Huntington Beach Breakers are made up of Brittany Hay,

Jessica Hancock, Kelly Melone, Amber Fulton, Natalie Mickelson, Crystal

Neer, Brook Ruiz, Erica Phillips, Ashley McDonough, Kari Best, Vanessa

Torrez, Amanda Ford, Kandy Henry, head coach Dan Hay and assistant

coaches Kevin Mickelson and Rod Hancock.

The Marina High boys’ soccer team just got back from competing in a

summer tournament in Santa Barbara, where the short-handed Vikings put on

a remarkable run.

Marina, which suited up just 11 players for the tournament, went all

the way to the final game, where the Vikings dropped a 3-2 decision to

Servite in a match that wasn’t decided until the final minute of a second

overtime session.

What’s commendable here is that these 11 Vikings played three soccer

games within a six hour period. Not one player left the field in any of

those games.

Marina might have fielded a young team -- only three varsity players

are returning from last year, and three of the 11 were sophomores -- but

the Vikings certainly are conditioned.

Camp Time: The City of Huntington Beach Community Services Department,

in cooperation with Skyhawks Sports Programs for Kids, will offer two

camps next week. One is a Mini-Hawk Camp, which offers instruction for

youngsters who are new to sports. It will run July 30 through Aug. 3 at

Murdy Community Center. The other, a Soccer Camp, will also run those

same dates, at Edison Community Center.
