Louisiana State University graduate student Adam Leache has won the
prestigious Ernst Mayr Award for the best student paper at the recent
meeting of the Society for the Study of Evolution held June 26 through
July 1 in Knoxville, Tenn. Leache, of Huntington Beach, presented a paper
titled “Molecular Systematics of the Eastern Fence Lizard (Sceloporus
undulatus): A Bayesian Approach.” He won partly because of his clear
explanation of the new and difficult Bayesian phylogenetics method. . . .
Jason W. Guchereau of Huntington Beach was named to the dean’s list for
the spring 2001 semester at Lewis and Clark College. Full-time students
who earn at least a 3.75 grade-point average, based on a minimum of 12
graded semester hours, are named for this honor. . . . Marine Corps PFC.
Jose M. Martinez, a 2000 graduate of Huntington Beach High School,
recently graduated from the Basic Hygiene Equipment Operator Course at
Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. During
the course, Martinez received instruction in basic plumbing, maintenance
management, military water supply, water purification and hygiene
equipment and field sanitation. . . . Navy Ensign Jerod M. Konowal,
recently received his commission as a naval officer after completing
Officer Candidate School at Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air
Station, Pensacola, Fla. During the 13-week training program, Konowal
received extensive instruction on a variety of specialized subjects
including navigation, ship handling, engineering, naval warfare and
management. He is the son of Marylin J. and James M. Konowal of
Huntington Beach. . . . Huntington Beach residents were honored at the
Orange County Fair. Kay Gillespie received top honors for her collection
of perfume bottles at the Orange County Fair. Cheryl Peterson won first
and third prizes in best in show in the quilt hanging category. Karl
Kuelin won best in show for potted flowering and nonflowering
Cyphostemajuttae and Succulent Madagascar plants. Gerda Hayes won first
prize for her Beaucaenea bottle palm in the flowering potted plants
category.
